The R20 technique for laser tattoo removal is a method described in the last few years to treat unwanted tattoos more quickly. Tattoo removal has traditionally been very difficult. This is because tattoos are designed to be permanent. Also tattoo particles are very small, making them hard to target with traditional lasers. Newer lasers called Q-switched (or quality switched) have been designed to remove these small particles. The energy shatters the tattoo particle into small pieces that are slowly removed by the body. Even with this design, it can take over ten treatments to completely remove a tattoo. Some newer models with picosecond settings such as Picosure by Cynosure, Picoway by Syneron-Candela, and Enlighten by Cutera modify the settings even further to treat smaller particles, and fewer treatments are needed. But these new technologies are very expensive and may be price-prohibitive for many people who want to remove tattoos. The R20 laser tattoo removal technique uses the traditional Q-switched lasers to treat the tattoo four times in one day. R20 stands for repeat 20, which means that the treatment is repeated every 20 minutes. Since a very large amount of energy is put into the skin, laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, so the skin is numbed prior to the treatment. Cold air during the treatment further helps with comfort. Also, during the 20 minutes between each treatment, the area is kept cold with ice. The R20 laser tattoo removal technique has been shown to remove tattoos in as few as 3 treatments.

There are several factors that can affect how easily a tattoo is removed:

  • Ink Color - Colors such as black and red are easier to remove than blue, green, and white.
  • Number of Colors - The more colors there are in a tattoo, the more difficult it is to remove.
  • Type of Ink - Professional tattoos are more difficult to treat than amateur tattoos.
  • Depth of the Ink and Number of Layers - Tattoos that are deeper in the skin are not removed as easily as those closer to the surface, and if there is a tattoo over a another previous one, removal is more difficult.
  • Amount of Ink - Of course the amount of ink that is used will affect the tattoo removal treatment; more ink will require more treatments.
  • Location - Tattoos closer to the heart such as those on the chest are cleared more quickly by the body and require fewer treatments. Tattoos on the ankles and feet take the longest for the body to clear.
  • Skin Color - The person's skin type will affect the tattoo removal process. People with darker skin may have complications such as darkening or lightening of the surrounding skin after the treatment.

With all of these challenges, it is important to understand how difficult it is to remove a tattoo, even with new techniques such as the R20 laser tattoo removal technique and new technologies such as picosecond lasers. So be sure that you really want the tattoo before getting it. Contact us for a free consultation with Dr. Alex.

At A E Skin we are now offering an exciting new treatment - Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening. This innovative technology is a modification of the laser skin tightening treatment and uses gentle laser micropulses to slowly heat up the skin, which stimulates collagen production. Collagen is the protein in the skin that keeps the skin firm and tight, providing the youthful appearance we want. Collagen is naturally lost over time which leads to loose skin, wrinkles, and enlarged pores. By stimulating new, fresh, and healthy collagen, the photorejuvenation treatment will reverse the effects of aging by treating enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and even acne scars. The heat generated from the photorejuventation treatment is also absorbed by broken capillaries and tiny blood vessels, which also helps with redness or rosacea. You can expect an improved complexion with a more radiant glow and tightened pores, often times this is seen right away. Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening is non-surgical and non-invasive. There is zero pain (we don't even need numbing cream) and zero downtime. Some people experience redness after the treatment, but this is usually gone in less than an hour. So you can go to work right away! The most common areas treated are the face and neck. Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening treatments can be performed as frequently as every two weeks and most people do an initial series of four to six treatments for optimal results followed by maintenance treatments once every three months. The results from a single Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening treatment can be very subtle so it is important to complete a series of treatments. Since the results are seen over time it never looks like you had anything done. Your friends will compliment you on how rested and refreshed you look. The Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening treatments are fast, the full face takes less than ten minutes! Additionally, the photorejuvenation treatment is safe for all skin types. One of the best things about the photorejuvenation treatment is that it can be combined with other treatments. The most popular combination is the Tight and Bright Rejuvenation, which combines the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatment with the Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening treatment. The Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening will enhance the results of the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatment by improving redness and enlarged pores. The results of this combination are quite impressive. The Photorejuvenation Skin Tightening treatment will also further enhance improvements in fine lines and wrinkles that are treated with BotoxJuvederm, and Voluma. At A E Skin all treatments are performed by Dr. Alex, who has performed over 5,000 laser treatments and teaches others on laser treatments. Contact us for a free consultation with Dr. Alex.

We are proud to carry the A E Skin line of products for our patients. Our skin care products work for just about any type of skin and address multiple concerns. The Brightening Cream is our most popular product, we can't keep it on the shelves. The Brightening Cream has three prescription strength ingredients to treat dark spots and discolorations as well as fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, acne, and acne scars. The Brightening Cream works well to treat damaged skin and at the same time providing rejuvenation for anti-aging effects. Some people can get dry with this product, which is why many people combine it with the Hydrating Serum. The Hydrating Serum is like drinking a glass of water for your skin. It contains hyaluronic acid, which draws water into the skin and hydrates dry skin while improving fine lines and wrinkles. The Hydrating Serum is used twice a day just before moisturizer. The Triple Antioxidant Serum is another popular product. Vitamins C and E with ferulic acid will boost the sun protection from sunscreen, preventing damage in the form of dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. Vitamin C also helps stimulate collagen formation, to provide the tight and youthful appearance people want. The Triple Antioxidant Serum works in different ways than the Brightening Cream and together they provide a powerful punch. The Triple Antioxidant Serum is applied in the morning while the Brightening Cream is applied at night. The Exfoliating Serum rounds out the core products in the A E Skin line of products. Containing salicylic acid, it dissolves the glue that holds the dead skin cells together on the skin surface, providing a gently daily exfoliation. A stronger version, the Acne Max Solution, contains 50 % more salicylic acid along with other ingredients targeting acne to help with redness and killing the bacteria in the skin. For best results, the products are used for four to eight weeks prior to treatments such as the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatment, Micro Laser Peel, Soft and Smooth Rejuvenation, Pro Fractional Therapy, Ultimate Rejuvenation, chemical peels, and Ultherapy. The collagen boost from the A E Skin products complements treatments such as Botox, Juvederm, and Voluma. Please see our video testimonials from our satisfied patients. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not use the Brightening Cream, Exfoliating Serum, or Acne Max solution. The A E Skin Weekend Rejuvenation is the newest and most exciting treatment now available at A E Skin. Dr. Alex designed the Weekend Rejuvenation by modifying his previously designed Ultimate Rejuvenation to allow for recovery in a weekend. This combination laser treatment addresses multiple aspects of aging in a single session, including dark spots and other discolorations, redness and broken capillaries, uneven texture and tone, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, dull skin, and laxity. The treatment starts with baseline photographs and application of numbing cream which remains on the skin for approximately 15 minutes. After the skin is cleaned and eye protection is applied, the first step is the Forever Young BBL IPL Photofacial treatment. The Forever Young BBL IPL Photofacial treatment is the most common treatment at A E Skin and Dr. Alex has performed nearly 5,000 of these treatments. This step takes less than five minutes and improves dark spots, uneven color, rosacea or generalized redness, and broken capillaries. The Forever Young BBL IPL Photofacial treatment also helps to stimulate collagen formation (which naturally slows down as we age) to improve the skin's radiance and close enlarged pores. The second step is the Micro Laser Peel, which removes a thin layer of dead skin cells to improve the texture and make the skin smoother to the touch. This also provides a radiant glow to the skin as light is reflected better off the skin when the surface is smooth as opposed to rough skin due to buildup of dead skin cells that occurs naturally over time as the skin cell growth cycle slows. The Micro Laser Peel also enhances the results of the Forever Young BBL IPL Photofacial treatment because it allows for faster exfoliation of the pigment. The final step is a light version of the Pro Fractional Therapy. In this step, microscopic holes are made in the skin, similar to microneedling but more precise. The Pro Fractional Therapy goes about ten times as deep as the Micro Laser Peel but treats less than 2 % of the skin surface instead of the entire surface treated with the Micro Laser Peel. This not only stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, but also allows for exfoliation of the deeper pigment which does not always occur with just the first two steps. Redness and swelling are normal after the treatment and cold compresses can be applied to keep you comfortable. If the treatment is done on a Friday, most people are recovered by the following Monday and can go back to work with mineral makeup. A series of three to six treatments are recommended at four to eight week intervals. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not be treated. Please see the links to some video testimonials below to see what patients say about the treatment. Contact us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Alex.

Tags: Juvederm   Botox

Do you know the difference between Juvederm and Botox? You will by the end of the blog post!

You've likely heard of both Juvederm and Botox treatments from television commercials, magazine advertisements or even friends Juvederm and Botox Differences Encino CAwho have experienced them first-hand. These two dermal (skin-related) products are both very popular for their anti-aging features. Juvederm was approved by the FDA in 2006; Botox has been used for cosmetic procedures since 2002. It has also been helpful in treating medical conditions including profuse sweating, chronic migraine headaches and involuntary muscle spasms around the eyes. Our medical staff at A E Skin in Encino want to educate their current and future patients on the procedures they offer, starting with the difference between these two products.

Juvederm basics

Juvederm is an injectable facial filler made from hyaluronic acid, a protein which occurs naturally in the tissues of mammals, including people. Its main function is to soften the crease that settles between the outside of the nose to the corner of the mouth (called the nasolabial fold). It can also be used to augment the lips.

Part of Juvederm's appeal is that since it has organic components, adverse reactions are rare and the body eventually reabsorbs the substance. Typically the treatments take a few minutes with Dr. Alex and you will enjoy the results for six to fifteen months.

Botox introduction

Botox is also a cosmetic skin treatment delivered by injection with a fine needle by your doctor. Made of purified protein, Botox is used to smooth out wrinkles and lines that form around the eyes and forehead. It works by temporarily relaxing the targeted muscles, which decreases the appearance of wrinkles. Botox takes just a few minutes to deposit. You will see the results in as early as three days and you will enjoy the results for up to four months, depending on the patient.

What's the difference?

Their main differences are where they are injected and the evidence of their results. Juvederm works by plumping up areas around the nose and mouth that have gradually lost their own hyaluronic acid, giving way to "smile" or "marionette" lines. It's designed to be most noticeable when the facial muscles are at rest. Botox, on the other hand, is helpful in smoothing out wrinkles around the eyes and forehead that become more prominent during expressions such as surprise, laughing or frowning.

If you've been noticing some extra furrows and grooves are beginning to multiply on your face, talking with Dr. Alex Eshaghian, MD, PhD will help determine which cosmetic treatment is best for your situation. Contact us for a free consultation.
