Voluma before and afterVoluma is a newer filler made by Allergan, the company that makes Botox, Juvederm, and Latisse, used to address signs of aging including the smile lines, marionette lines, and jowls. It also provides the youthful apple of the cheek, something we lose naturally over time. For years Juvederm has been used to fill and smoothen out the smile lines and marionette lines. So what does Voluma do that Juvederm does not do? In order to address these signs of aging, we need to understand why they occur. We naturally lose the volume in the mid-face (upper cheeks) over time. The fat pads in these areas get smaller and the bones move downward and inward. We also lose collagen over time. Collagen is what keeps the skin nice and tight and firm and youthful in appearance. As a result the skin becomes loose and saggy and with gravity things start to sink. Together these changes lead to these signs of aging. Voluma addresses the source of the problem, the volume loss in the upper cheeks whereas Juvederm addresses the result of the problem, the lines that form. This is one advantage of Voluma over Juvederm and by addressing the voume loss, you do not see the puffy appearance that is sometimes seen with Juvederm treatments. The second advantage of Voluma over Juvederm is that in addition to treating the smile lines, marionette lines, and jowls, it also gives you back the youthful apple of the cheek. Juvederm does not do this because it is designed to be injected in the lines, not in the upper cheeks. Voluma is designed to be injected on the bones of the upper cheek, giving the structural support you lose over time and providing an instant lift. The third advantage of Voluma over Juvederm is that it is designed to last up to two years with optimal correction. With all of these benefits, why would anyone get Juvederm? Because of these benefits most people start with a Voluma treatment, typically one syringe per side. After a few weeks the swelling will subside and the final results are seen. At this point if further improvement is desired Juvederm can be injected directly into the folds, but less Juvederm will be required. So in this sense, Voluma and Juvederm are complementary to each other in rejuvenating the face. Other treatments such as Botox and Ultherapy can be used to address other wrinkles on the face for even better results. Dr. Alex has performed over 1,000 injectable treatments with many satisfied patients. Contact us for a free consultation with Dr. Alex.

A E Skin line of productsThat's right, we now have a money back guarantee on the A E Skin line of skin care products. Dr. Alex will customize a regimen for each person with four products. Our most popular product is the A E Skin Brightening Cream, which helps with age spots, sun spots, and melasma as well as improving fine lines and wrinkles. The A E Skin Hydrating Serum is a close second and can be added to any existing skin care regimen. The A E Skin Hydrating Serum is like drinking a glass of water for the skin. It contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin which binds 1,000 times its weight in water, bringing water into the skin. Exfoliant products include the A E Skin Exfoliating Serum and A E Skin Acne Max Solution, which remove the layer of dead skin cells from the surface, making the texture softer and smoother and providing a radiant glow. The A E Skin Acne Max Solution contains other ingredients to further help improve acne breakouts. The A E Skin Triple Antioxidant Solution is another favorite of our patients. Containing vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid, the A E Skin Triple Antioxidant Solution increases the sun protection provided by sunscreen to remove dark spots and stimulate collagen formation, which improves fine lines and wrinkles. Many people are hesitant to start using new products because they don't want to invest in something that will not work. That is why we now have our risk-free, money back guarantee. If you use the recommended products daily for three months and we do not see improvement in the standardized photographs we take in the office, you will get your meny back, no questions asked. Thousands of patients have used these products over the past five years and we have not had a single patient who used the full regimen without seeing improvement in the skin. Many of these products, along with other products, are now available on our online store. A E Skin has been named Best Aesthetic Practice  for the third time. This disctinct honor was given at THE Aesthetic Academy conference in Newport Beach on October 31, 2015. The winner was determined by the support of the patients who voted for the practices. At A E Skin we work hard to provide the best outcomes and experience for our patients and their support means so much to us. We cannot thank our patients enough. Dr. Alex was able to accept this award on Halloween night accompanied by his son Adam dressed in his doctor costume. Everyone at the awards ceremony said that Adam stole the show. He was so excited that he is planning to enroll in the injectable training course next year so he can do Botox treatments on his own patients. THE Aesthetic Academy is a smaller and regional version of the annual Aesthetic Show. Dr. Alex had the opportunity to participate in the injectable course, a full day training session designed for doctors and nurses to improve their skills. The morning session included lectures on various topics such as preventing Botox complications, using fillers for facial rejuvenation, and new injectables such as Kybella to treat fullness in the neck. Expert speakers from around the country included Dr. Andrew Ordon of the hit television show The Doctors, Dr. Alexander Rivkin of Westside Aesthetics inventor of the non-surgical nose job, and Dr. Phil Werschler. The afternoon session allowed Dr. Alex to observe live injections by these experts. Dr. Alex learned new and different techniques to improve outcomes, decrease pain, and minimize side effects. One of the new and exciting injectable treatments Dr. Alex learned about is Kybella, an injection done in the neck to dissolve fat and reduce the fullness in the neck. Made by Allergan, the company that makes Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, and Latisse, Kybella training will be available in 2016 and we plan to offer it shortly thereafter. Other new and exciting treatments include skin tightening, non-invasive body contouring, tattoo removal, cellulite treatment, and feminine rejuvenation. Dr. Alex makes significant efforts to attend conferences regularly to learn about the newest techniques and devices in order to provide his patients with the best outcomes. Botox before and afterDroopy eyelids are a rare but possible side effect of Botox treatments.

What are the most common side effects after a Botox treatment?

The most common side effects after a Botox treatment are pain, bleeding, bruising, infection, swelling, and tenderness. Most of the time these are mild and go away on their own. Precautions such as cleaning the area to be treated with alcohol prior to treatment and using cold compresses such as ice packs will minimize the risk of many of these side effects.

How do people get droopy eyelids after a Botox treatment?

Botox relaxes muscles of facial expression on the face. The muscular anatomy in the face is complicated and  there are many muscles neaar each other. When Botox is injected to treat frown lines between the brows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and crow's feet around the eyes sometimes the Botox travels to the muscles that raise the eyelids. This effectively relaxes these muscles and makes it difficult to raise the eyelids. As a result you see a droopiness or heaviness to the eyelid.

What is the difference between a droopy eyelid and a droopy eyebrow?

This is an important question because the treatment is different for a droopy eyelid and a droopy eyebrow. The difference is whether it is the lid that is droopy or the brow. Sometimes the brow will appear lower than normal or feel heavy. This is treated with a small amount of Botox in the corner of the brow to counteract this heaviness.

How often do people get droopy eyelids after a Botox treatment?

In the studies conducted by Allergan (makers of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Lattise, and now Kybella) the incidence of droopy eyelids (also known as blepharoptosis) is approximately 3 %. In Dr. Alex's experience this value is less than 1 %.

Is droopy eyelids a permanent side effect of Botox treatments?

No, droopy eyelids after a Botox treatment are temporary and treatable.

How long do droopy eyelids after a Botox treatment last?

Droopy eyelids after a Botox treatment can last anywhere from a few days to three months but usually resolve after a few weeks. The full effects of Botox (whether intended effects such as wrinkle reduction or side effects such as droopy eyelids) normally go away on their own in three to four months.

How can you treat droopy eyelids resulting from a Botox treatment?

Droopy eyelids are treated with prescription eye drops. These eyedrops will relax a different muscle in the eye allowing the eye to open up. A commonly used prescription eye drop to treat droopy eyelids resulting from Botox treatments is Iopidine (apraclonidine). Apply two to three drops to the affected eye two to three times per day as needed. The droopiness will go away on its own and you will notice this when you wake up in the morning.

How can you prevent droopy eyelids?

Since droopy eyelids result from spread of Botox it is important that the Botox is injected in the right place. So the first thing to do is find an experienced injector such as Dr. Alex who is familiar with the properties of Botox, facial anatomy, and techniques to minimize side effects from Botox treatments. It is also critical that you follow the aftercare instructions. Avoid heat, alcohol consumption, and exercise for 24 hours after a Botox treatment because this can bring blood to the skin resulting in spread of the Botox and side effects such as droopy eyelids. Also do not lie down flat for four hours after a treatment because this can also cause movement of the Botox.

Contact us to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Alex. A E Skin is distinguished to be a Gold account with Allergan because we do so many Botox treatments.
