Having healthy skin and a glowing complexion is a priority for both men and women of all ages. However, using the right products for the job makes all the difference in the world. Do you know which are the best products and treatments to help your skin stay fresh? Determining the best way to keep your skin young is easy with help from Dr. Alex Eshaghian, MD, PhD and the staff at A E Skin in Encino, CA.
What causes damage to the skin?
One of the main sources of skin damage is exposure to the Encino sun. The sun’s UV rays break down the collagen and elastic in the skin, causing discolorations and wrinkles. Tobacco use also causes the skin to age prematurely, as smoking reduces the oxygen which gets into the skin, leading to wrinkles. Aging is also one of the most common culprits of skin damage.
Procedures and Products to Keep Your Skin Fresh
Facials are one of the quickest and easiest ways to rejuvenate your skin. Facials nourish and exfoliate the skin, providing a natural glow. Extractions, masks, and massage during the facial also contribute to a fresh face.
Chemical peels even out skin tone, help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and treat sun damaged skin. The chemical peel removes damaged skin, leaving new, healthy skin in its place. Watch this video for information on the Red Carpet Peel experience.
Botox relaxes the muscles which cause wrinkles to prevent them from forming. This keeps your skin smooth and flat. Botox before and after pictures
Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to stimulate your skin to naturally produce new fresh and healthy collagen to tighten skin that becomes loose and wrinnkled over time and with age.
There are many forms of laser treatments for numerous dermatological problems. These treatments improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, redness, aging, and sun damage. The most popular are the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial, Soft and Smooth Rejuvenation, Tight and Bright Rejuvenation, Fountain of Youth Rejuvenation, and Ultimate Rejuvenation.

If you wear makeup, Dr. Alex will urge you to follow a daily skin care routine to keep your skin clear of impurities. Leaving makeup on overnight causes it to become trapped in sweat and oil, leaving your skin open to blemishes and breakouts. To prevent these unwanted imperfections, Dr. Alex suggests using a makeup-removing pre-moistened wipe to clean the surface of your skin, then washing for 30 to 45 seconds with a mild cleanser such as the Elta MD Foaming Facial Cleanser and warm water. Using water that's too hot can also rinse away moisture from the skin, leaving it dehydrated.
Don't overdo it
Acne treatment products are designed to dry up oils that cause pimples to develop. However, Dr. Alex cautions against overuse of these products. Acne treatments can contain salicylic acid (such as the A E Skin Acne Max Solution) or benzoyl peroxide which, when used correctly, are excellent at fighting breakouts. However, less is definitely more when it comes to applying these products; they can cause excessive dryness and peeling. Using an oil-free moisturizer after applying them can prevent your skin from becoming dried out.
It might seem like you're doing the right thing by removing whiteheads, blackheads and other blemishes with your nails or other tools. However, Dr. Alex encourages you to adopt a hands-free policy when it comes to your skin. Bacteria on your fingers or under your nails can transfer to a pimple, leading to an infection and a much more noticeable eyesore. It can even lead to scarring.
Are you frustrated with that double chin? Does it affect your self-confidence? Does your double chin make you feel less attractive or overweight? Have you tried diet and exercise? Have you tried other treatments that were ineffective? If so, Kybella may be right for you. Kybella is a new treatment for the double chin (also known as submental fullness) which removes the fat so that it doesn't come back.
What is submental fullness?
Submental fullness, or a double chin, is a common condition in adults where excess fat is stored in the neck below the chin and jawline. This decreases the youthful jawline definition and leads to an imbalanced, older, and overweight appearance. According to a 2015 study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery 67 % of people are bothered by the appearance of a double chin. There are many factors that contribute to having a double chin including age, genetics, and weight. Often times, diet and exercise alone are not enough to address a double chin.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a prescription-strength injection used to treat the double chin (submental fat) in adults. Deoxycholic acid is a molecule that is found naturally in the body that breaks down fat from the diet. Kybella is the first and only FDA approved injectable treatment for the double chin.
How does Kybella work?
Kybella actually destroys the fat cells that accumulate in the neck. The body then naturally eliminates the fat slowly over a few weeks. Once these cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat.
How many Kybella treatments are required?
Kybella is provided in 2 mL vials. Normally two 2 mL vials are used for each treatment, but this amount varies from person to person depending on the size of the area to be treated. In the Kybella studies up to six treatments were performed on patients, but now with more data we find that most people require two to four treatments. At A E Skin photographs are taken every six weeks to monitor your progress. Upon review of these pictures you can decide if your desired results have been achieved or if you would like to proceed with more Kybella treatments.
How often are Kybella treatments done?
Dr. Alex recommends repeating the Kybella treatment every six weeks.
Who should not receive a Kybella treatment?
Kybella treatments should not be performed on anyone who has an infection in the area. Kybella has not been studied on women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast feeding. Dr. Alex does not recommend Kybella treatments for such individuals. Tell Dr. Alex if you have medical conditions in the neck area such as difficulty swallowing. Also tell Dr. Alex if you have had or are planning to have cosmetic surgical treatments in the neck or face area such as a facelift or neck lift or if you have a bleeding disorder.
When do you see results after a Kybella treatment?
The results of a single Kybella treatment are usually seen approximately four to six weeks after the treatment. At that time the area is reassessed to determine if further Kybella treatments are indicated. Most patients have two to four Kybella treatments every six weeks.
How long do results with Kybella last?
The great thing about Kybella is that it permanently dissolves the fat in the neck and it is not expected to come back.
Is Kybella safe?
Kybella has been approved by the FDA and tested on over 1,600 people worldwide in over 20 clinical studies. These Kybella studies were conducted on people 18 years of age or older. Kybella has not been studied in children under 18 years of age or in women who are pregnant or breast feeding. The studies demonstrated that over two thirds of people treated with Kybella responded with at least a one grade improvement and 79 % of patients treated with Kybella were satisfied with their results.
Does Kybella work in other areas?
What are the side effects with Kybella?
Kybella is an injection. As with any injection there are risks for pain, bleeding, bruising, and infection. The most common side effects of Kybella are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. Other side effects include, but are not limited to, difficulty swallowing and nerve injury leading to temporary muscle weakness in the face which can cause an uneven smile.
There is a brand new treatment available for body contouring called Sculpsure.
What is Sculpsure?
Sculpsure is a new laser technology cleared by the FDA to remove stubborn fat in areas such as the belly and flanks.
How does Sculpsure work?
Sculpsure uses a diode laser technology that is applied to the skin. A flat applicator is applied to the target area and is strapped in place around the waste. The laser penetrates deep into the skin and targets the fat just below the skin and heats it up to 42 to 47 degrees Celsius. Your body will naturally eliminate the fat over time. The surface of the skin is protected with a contact cooling mechanism. The Sculpsure treatment takes just 25 minutes per area.
What is the recovery after a Sculpsure treatment?
The great thing about Sculpsure is that there is no down time so you can resume your normal activities regularly.
Does Sculpsure hurt?
There is minimal discomfort during a Sculpsure treatment. The major sensation is a gentle heating which is precisely controlled using the contact cooling on the surface.
How are the results with Sculpsure?
When will I see results after a Sculpsure treatment?
Results are typically seen in six to twelve weeks after a Sculpsure treatment.
Is Sculpsure right for me?
Sculpsure is designed for people with stubborn fat around the waist that is resistant to diet and exercise. Sculpsure is not intended to treat obesity and it is not intended to lead to weight loss. As a matter of fact, most people do not even experience weight loss. Contact us for a free consultation with Dr. Alex. Sculpsure will be available soon at A E Skin and we will host an event with a live demonstration to introduce our patients to this exciting new technology and offer exclusive specials.
