Filling the lips is a popular treatment to add volume to the lips for a full appearance. We naturally lose volume in various areas of the face over time, and one of these area is the lips. Now the volume and shape of the lips can be enhanced with dermal fillers such as Juvéderm.
How does Juvéderm work in the lips?
Juvéderm works by restoring the volume in the lips. Juvéderm is an injectable product made of hyaluronic acid that is placed in the lips. The great thing is that the treatment can be targeted to meet your goals. For example if you have more volume loss in the upper lip, more Juvéderm can be added there. With the perfect proportions, the size of the lower lip is slightly thicker than the upper lip. Also the volume can be targeted to the center of the lips if that is your goal. The cupid's bow in the center of the upper lip can be enhanced and the borders of the lips can be shaped.
When will I see the results with Juvéderm in the lips?
The great thing about Juvéderm is that you see the results right away. There is always some swelling from the injection itself which lasts up to two weeks. At that time the final results are seen. This is when you can return to the office to see your before and after pictures. You can also assess your lips to see if you have achieved the results you want or if you would like more enhancement.
How long will the results last with Juvéderm?
Everyone is different and each person's body metabolizes the product at a different rate. Most people enjoy the results of Juvéderm in their lips for approximately six months. That is a good time for a maintenance treatment. In other areas Juvéderm lasts longer but since there is a lot of movement in the lips when eating, speaking, and breathing it is metabolized faster.
How much Juvéderm will I need for my lips?
Dr. Alex always recommends a conservative approach. Most people will start with one syringe of Juvéderm in the lips. Some people do not even require a full syringe of Juvéderm, in which case it can be used around the lips in the smile lines or in the vertical lines above and below the lips.
I don't want to look like a duck.
That's the great thing about having your treatment done with Dr. Alex at A E Skin. Dr. Alex always starts with a conservative amount of product. This is because you could always add more later but it is difficult to remove the product (although this can be done).
Will I bruise after a Juvéderm treatment?
Bruising is not uncommon with Juvéderm treatments and other fillers such as Voluma and Restylane. Some people are more susceptible to bruising than others. To reduce the risk of bruising avoid any blood thinners such as aspirin for a few days before and after the treatment and apply cold compresses such as ice packs to the treated areas. Some areas have a higher risk for bruising than others. Areas around the eyes have a lot of blood vessels and pose a higher risk of bruising. Another great thing about having your Juvéderm treatment done with Dr. Alex at A E Skin is that we treat your bruises as early as the next day at no extra charge. Dr. Alex uses a laser to target the blood and the bruise usually disappears in a few days.
What else can I do to enhance my lips?
In addition to restoring the volume with Juvéderm you can use Botox to further enhance the lips. Botox works by relaxing muscles. There is a muscle that goes around the lips. By adding a small amount of Botox in this area, the muscle will relax and you will have more of a pout. Also placing a small amount of Botox in the jawline near the chin will pull up the corners of the mouth by about one millimeter, decreasing the sad face look that people sometimes get over time. The results of Botox in these areas are subtle. Often times there is a strange sensation when using the lips for the first couple of weeks.
With their rise in popularity in recent years, cosmetic procedures to look great have never been easier or more available. Getting older causes the skin to lose elastin and begin to sag. With products like Juvederm Voluma to restore volume to these problem areas, you can revive your aging skin in just a few visits to your Encino, CA dermatologist at AE Skin.
What is Juvederm Voluma?
Juvederm is a dermal filler injected into the facial area to restore volume to aging skin. Juvaderm itself is a smooth gel made from hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in your body and decreases as you grow older. Your Encino dermatologist injects Juvederm into the skin on the face to replace the lost hyaluronic acid. Once injected, it adds volume to the skin, providing a plumper and smoother appearance.
What problems can Juvederm Voluma treat?
Juvederm focuses mainly on restoring fullness to the lips, nasolabial folds, also called “smile” or “parenthesis” lines, and cheeks. Unlike Botox, which prevents the muscles from moving, Juvederm fills sagging skin to restore its fullness. While other fillers or injectables may need regular sessions to achieve their goal, Juvaderm’s design has proven to provide long-lasting results. Results can last up to two years, allowing you to undergo fewer treatments over a longer period of time.
What can I expect during Juvederm Voluma treatment?
The treatment itself is fast and performed in-office by your Encino doctor. You will see results immediately. There is no recovery time required after your treatment and you can get back to your daily routine as soon as you leave your doctor’s office. Your doctor uses a syringe with a tiny needle to inject the gel to minimize discomfort. Numbing agents applied to the skin may also help decrease discomfort.

The Grammy's. The Oscars. The Evening of Glamour. A E Skin held its fourth annual Evening of Glamour on Thursday March 10, 2016 at our office in Encino. With over 40 people in attendance, it was another great turnout. We were delighted to celebrate the red carpet season with so many of our valued patients. One night only exclusive specials were available on all products and services including Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Ultherapy, Kybella, IPL photofacials, and more. The newest treatment available was Kybella, the first and only FDA approved non-surgical injectable treatment for the double chin. Refreshments were provided courtesy of Allergan, makers of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Kybella, and Latisse. Support was also provided by Elta MD and IS Clinical. We had two stations where our guests had opportunities to learn more about our products and treatments: Allergan (makers of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Kybella, and Latisse) and IS Clinical (makers of the Active Serum). As always the red carpet was available for photo opportunities and we had video testimonials on various products and services. We were excited to give out over $4,000 is prizes. Best dressed won an Ultimate Rejuvenation treatment, a $2,300 value. We also held our popular Botox vial contest where our guests guessed the number of Botox vials in our jar. The person with the closest guess won 20 units of free Botox. In our raffle, we gave away even more prizes including A E Skin and Elta MD skin care products and treatments such as an IPL photofacial, Soft and Smooth Rejuvenation, Tight and Bright Rejuvenation, and Fountain of Youth Rejuvenation. Many of these products and treatments are now available on our online store. We thank all of our valued patients for their attendance and we hope to them again at our Summer Soiree in June. Thank you for your support!
This week Allergan (makers of Botox, Voluma, Juvederm, and Latisse) launched the Chin Up campaign with their spokesperson Khloe Kardashian for Kybella, a treatment for the double chin now available at A E Skin in Encino, CA.
Kybella - Treatment for the Double Chin
Are you tired of that double chin? Does it make you look overweight, old, or self-conscious? If you've tried diet and exercise and nothing seems to work, then Kybella may be right for you. Kybella is the first and thus far only FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment for submental fullness, or the double chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a natural substance found in the body that is used to digest the dietary fay. When injected into the skin, Kybella will dissolve the fat and your body eliminates it naturally over time.
The Kybella Treatment
The Kybella treatment is fast, easy, and comfortable. At A E Skin we numb the skin and use Dr. Alex's painless technique to maximize your comfort. During each treatment a series of Kybella injections are done in the area; the specific number of injections depends on the person. Most people require a series of two to four Kybella treatments every six to eight weeks, but some people require up to six Kybella treatments.
Safety of Kybella
After a Kybella Treatment
After your Kybella treatment the area will be swollen for a few days. Side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, redness, numbness, and areas of hardening in the area. Other side effects include hair loss at the injection site, difficulty swallowing, and a temporary assymmetric smile.
Who Should Not Get a Kybella Treatment?
You should not get a Kybella treatment if you have an infection in the area. Kybella has not been studied in women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding. You should not receive Kybella if you have difficulty swallowing, a medical condition in the neck area such as a thyroid abnormality or enlarged lymph nodes, a bleeding disorder, or previous or planned surgery in the area.
