A common concern for many people is dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles under the eyes make people look tired and old.
Why are there dark circles under the eyes?
There are a number of reason why we see dark circles under the eyes. When we are born we have a fat pat directly under the eyes. As we age the fat pad moves downward into the upper cheek, leaving a hollowing under the eyes. This can create a shadow and lead to the appearance of a dark circle. In addition to volume loss, dark circles under the eyes can be a result of poor diet, lack of hydration, not enough sleep, allergies, or genetics.
How are dark circles treated?
If dark circles are caused by volume loss which occurs naturally as we age, it can be addressed by restoring the lost volume with a dermal filler. Dr. Alex recommends Restylane in this area because Restylane provides enhancement without drawing too much water in the skin (as in Juvederm) which can lead to a puffy appearance. While a puffy appearance may be desired in the lower face, puffiness under the eyes can be just as bad as, or worse than, dark circles themselves.
What is Restylane and what does it do?
Restylane is a dermal filler used to restore volume loss in the face. Similar to Juvederm, Voluma, and Volbella, Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water. This also provides a high level of safety because hyaluronic acid can be dissolved in the case of an adverse effect, which is not the case with certain other fillers such as Radiesse, Sculptra, or Bellafill. Dr. Alex places Restylane directly on the bone under the eye. This brings all of the structures upward to the surface, restoring the lost volume and providing a youthful and refreshed appearance.
When do you see results with Restylane?
The great thing about Restylane is that the results are seen right away. With any injection there is a risk of swelling and this is frequently seen with Restylane. However most people enjoy the appearance of the swelling. It is important to understand that the final results are seen approximately two weeks later once all of the swelling has subsided.
How long does Restylane last?
Some fillers such as Voluma can last up to two years. However there is a lot of motion on the face around the areas of the eyes. For this reason the results of filler treatments in this area do not last as long. Most people enjoy the results of their Restylane treatment under the eyes for approximately six months. At that time a maintenance treatment is recommended.
What are the side effects of a Restylane treatment?
With any injection there is a risk for pain, bleeding, bruising, swelling, redness, and infection. At A E Skin we take special precautions to minimize the risks of such adverse effects. For example we always apply complimentary numbing cream on the area before the treatment to maximize your comfort. We also provide complimentary laser bruise treatment as early as the next day. The area under the eyes contains many veins and has an increased risk for bruising compared to other areas. Bruising can last up to two weeks, but after a laser treatment, most bruises resolve within one to three days.

Juvederm Volbella is the newest dermal filler available for lip enhancement. A member of the Juvederm family Juvederm Volbella is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water. Juvederm Volbella is specifically designed to enhance the lips. It can enhance the size, shape, and definition of the lips as well reducing lines on and around the lips. Juvederm Volbella uses Vycross technology, like Juvederm Voluma, which allows patients to enjoy their results for a full year. Other fillers last up to six months in the lips. Since Juvederm Volbella is made of hyaluronic acid (unlike Radiesse, Sculptra, or Bellafill), it has a high level of safety because it can be dissolved in the event of an adverse effect.
Subtle Lip Enhancement
Lip enhancement has become very popular recently. However there is also a negative stigma associated with those whose lips are so large that they look fake or swollen, like a duck, or it is obvious that they had work done. While many people desire this type of enhancement, there are many people who desire a subtle enhancement to restore lost volume and shape, providing a youthful but natural appearance. Juvederm Volbella can be used for both types of enhancement. The hyaluronic acid material in Juvederm Volbella is very fine, allowing it to fill in fine lines and define the borders of the lips without making them look to big. At the same time Juvederm Volbella can also volumize the lips if desired. Juvederm Volbella is provided in 0.55 cc syringes. Most other fillers are provided in 1 cc syringes. This allows Dr. Alex to use a small amount of Juvederm Volbella for those who want a subtle enhancement. At the same time two or more syringes of Juvederm Volbella can be used for those wanting even more volume. This allows Dr. Alex to use Juvederm Volbella for a variety of patients with different desires. Everyone’s lips are different and Dr. Alex individualizes each treatment depending on what the patient wants.

What causes acne?
Acne is caused by stress and there are various types of stress including effects from lifestyle, hormones, and topical products. The pores get clogged, which leads to inflammation, growth of bacterial, and sometimes painful cysts. If treated inappropriately acne can also leave scars on the skin.
What are treatments for acne?
There are a number of treatment options for acne. First it is important to keep the skin clean at all times, especially after exercise. It is also important to decrease any stress in the body through lifestyle choices. Topical products include a variety of exfoliants, antibiotics, and retinoid products. Oral medications include antibiotics and Accutane, which has many side effects and is reserved for resistant or severe cases. Treatment options include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and a variety of laser treatments. Many of these treatments have a side effect profile that makes them undesirable. What is the Forever Clear Acne Treatment?
The Forever Clear Acne Treatment is a new treatment that uses the power of light from a laser to treat acne without topical creams or oral medications with side effects. Using the Sciton BBL Dr. Alex will use special settings to target acne-causing bacteria, decrease inflammation, and allow for faster healing of the skin.
How does the Forever Clear Acne Treatment work?
The Forever Clear Acne Treatment consists of three steps. Prior to the treatment we take baseline photographs to monitor your progress and apply a topical numbing cream for about 15 minutes. Then the face is cleansed and cold gel is applied to the skin to conduct the light. Eye protection will be applied to protect your eyes; you will see bright light during the treatment. This is normal; just keep your eyes closed.
- The first step uses blue light to target the acne-causing bacteria in the skin.
- The second step uses yellow or red light to decrease the inflammation in the skin.
- The third step uses gentle micro-pulses of infrared light to stimulate the natural healing process in the skin.
How long does a Forever Clear Acne Treatment take?
The Forever Clear Acne Treatment itself takes about 10 minutes. Plan to be in the office for 45 to 60 minutes to numb the skin, take photographs, and complete paperwork.
What is the recovery after a Forever Clear Acne Treatment?
The great thing about the Forever Clear Acne Treatment is that there is no recovery time. Most people resume their normal activities right away.
Does the Forever Clear Acne Treatment hurt?
At A E Skin we apply topical numbing cream before the treatment and use cold air during the treatment to maximize your comfort. Most people tolerate the treatment very well.
How many Forever Clear Acne Treatments will I need?
Dr. Alex recommends an initial series of six to eight Forever Clear Acne Treatments every one to two weeks. After that, one maintenance treatment is done every six to twelve weeks.
Are the results of the Forever Clear Acne Treatment permanent?
Acne is a condition we control, not cure. So maintenance treatments are required. After an initial series of treatments, most people have one maintenance treatment every six to twelve weeks.
