Winter is here and there are many changes. We tend to stay indoors and wear warm clothing. This makes it the perfect time for certain treatments that some may not get during the spring, summer, or fall. Here we discuss some of the most common treatment people have during the wintertime.
While the most common cosmetic concerns women have are about their faces, the rest of the body is important too. A common concern in the lower body is veins on the legs. These tend to appear over time and can be genetic. Other factors include wearing high heels and standing up for long periods of time. Fortunately, we can treat most leg veins with a laser. The light from the laser targets the blood and destroys the vein. After the treatment, you can have a bruise or darkening of the skin. But during the winter when we wear warm clothes it is easy to cover this up.
Chemical peels such as the Red Carpet Peel work well for a variety of concerns including fine lines, wrinkles, and dark discolorations. With stronger treatments there can be some recovery time when the skin is red or even peeling. During this time it is important to avoid the sun. The winter is an ideal time for this treatment because many people stay indoors during the cold winter months.
The fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatment is a more aggressive treatment that addresses fine lines, deeper wrinkles, and sun damage. Results from a single treatment can be impressive. The treatment stimulates collagen over time and improvement is seen slowly over several months. The downside is that there is usually one to two weeks of recovery time which includes redness, swelling, and flaking or crusting. Many people do this treatment when they have time off in the winter and are not seen by there coworkers or clients.
Dark circles under the eyes are a common concern for many people. There are many factors that contribute to it such as genetics, age, and lifestyle. Fortunately, there are several things we can do to improve dark circles under the eyes.
Get enough sleep
Getting enough sleep is critical to improving dark circles under the eyes. If you get enough sleep every night, the areas around the eyes will appear brighter in the morning and you will look more rested. In today’s day and age getting enough sleep is difficult with crazy work schedules. Although most people require about eight hours of sleep every night, some people require less and some require more. And this can change with age; usually we need less sleep as we get older. Having good sleep habits will help. Try to have a routine every night so that you can relax and fall asleep easily at the same time every night.
Eat a healthy diet
Eating a healthy diet is another lifestyle change that can affect the appearance of the eyes. What the doctor tells you to eat is not only important for your health, but also for the skin. Changes in the skin are often manifestations of what is going on in the body. Make sure to eat enough fruits and vegetables every day and avoid foods that are high in fat or sugar. Try to eat foods that are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals that damage the skin. At the same time avoid habits such as smoking which increase free radical formation in the body. Equally important is drinking enough water. About two thirds of the skin is water so it is important to have enough water in your body for appropriate function and appearance of the skin. When your body is dehydrated, the skin becomes dry and the areas around the eyes have a sunken appearance.
Exercise is the third lifestyle habit that will improve the appearance of dark circles under the eyes and the skin in general. Exercise is great for all parts of the body, the heart, the brain, the skin, and many others. Exercise allows for blood flow to the skin, providing nutrients to allow the skin to be healthy and function normally. When this happens, the skin looks better.
Use sunscreen daily
Sun damage is one of the most common causes of aging in the skin. The sun leads to many changes associated with aging including fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, dark spots, redness, and skin cancer. It is therefore important to protect your skin from the sun every day with a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Apply sunscreen every day of the year, even when it is cold outside because there is still sun. Also, apply sunscreen if it is overcast because some of the sun’s rays penetrate through clouds. Many people do not apply sunscreen because they are not outside much. But it is important to understand that when you are driving in your car or sitting inside near a window, the sun’s rays are still hitting your skin. Around the eyes sunglasses provide further protection.
Use a good eye cream
Eye creams can help improve the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. The new A E Skin Green Tea Essentials Enlightening Eye Cream is a great example. It includes multiple ingredients such as vitamins A, C, and E, retinol, and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients serve to improve the skin in a number of ways by hydrating the delicate skin under the eyes, providing volume, and stimulating collagen formation to tighten the skin.
Fillers under the eyes
Dermal fillers such as Restylane are commonly used to address dark circles under the eyes. One of the most common causes for such dark circles is loss of volume and hollowing under the eyes. In regular light a shadow is cast from the forehead to the tear trough, giving the appearance of a dark circle, which makes people look old and tired. Fillers such as Restylane can restore the lost volume and provide a healthy, youthful, and rested appearance.

Are you tired of looking in the mirror and only seeing wrinkles? It’s amazing how even the smallest wrinkle can affect your appearance and your self-esteem. This is where our Encino, CA dermatologist Dr. Alex Eshaghian comes in. Find out more about Juvederm and what it can do for you.
What is Juvederm?
Juvederm belongs to the hyaluronic acid dermal filler family. When these dermal fillers are injected into the skin it can target moderate to severe wrinkles and folds in the face. It is a particularly great option for someone looking to reduce the appearance of lines around the corners of their mouth.
This smooth hyaluronic acid gel is a sugar that is already naturally occurring in the body. When injected into the skin, hyaluronic acid naturally holds water to provide added volume to the area and to smooth out the skin.
Does getting Juvederm hurt?
When people hear injections they immediately worry that it will hurt. You’ll be happy to know that besides a slight pinch when they enter the skin, these needles are very small and produce minimal discomfort. If you are still worried about the discomfort we can also apply a topical numbing cream to the area beforehand.
When will results show up and how long will results last?
You may notice some swelling right after your injections but this should go away after a day. Once swelling goes down you should notice that your skin is visibly smoother.
Juvederm results are only temporary but if you are happy with your results and want to maintain them you can get follow-up injections about every 9 months to one year. During these follow-up treatments, smaller injections will be used in order to achieve the same results.

A E Skin had our sixth annual Holiday Party on Thursday December 1, 2016. This was our biggest and best event ever. Over 40 guests were in attendance to celebrate the Holiday season and take advantage of one-night-only exclusive specials on all services and products. At this event we featured live demonstrations of five treatments: Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, and Kybella. Our guests had the opportunity to observe live treatments and ask questions. The demonstrations were very popular based on attendance and feedback; therefore we plan on having live demonstrations at future events. Support was provided by Allergan (makers of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Kybella, and Latisse), Galderma (makers of Restylane), Alastin (makers of the Skin Nectar), and Elta MD. Light refreshments were provided as always and our guests had opportunities to take photographs on the Red Carpet. Each guests received a gift bag and we raffled off a number of prizes including products and laser services. The grand prize was an Ultimate Rejuvenation treatment which went to the guest who was voted best dressed.
Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles on the face associated with facial expression. In our demonstration we treated the horizontal lines seen on the upper forehead when one raises the brows, the vertical lines seen between the brows when one frowns, and the crow’s feet seen around the eyes when one smiles or squints. Most people enjoy the results of their Botox treatment for three to four months. Our guests had the opportunity to observe Dr. Alex’s painless Botox technique and ask questions.
Our second demonstration was Juvederm, the original product in the Juvederm family of fillers which now also includes Voluma and Volbella. These are hyaluronic acid products used to restore volume in the face. Juvederm is placed in the smile lines and marionette lines and the results are seen right away. Most people enjoy their results for six to twleve months.
Juvederm Volbella is our newest service that we offer. A member of the Juvederm family, Volbella is specifically designed to enhance the lips. Volbella can enhance the size and shape of the lips while at the same time improving the definition as well as the lines on or around the lips. Volbella comes in half size syringes, allowing for those who desire subtle enhancement. The best part of Volbella is that patients enjoy their results for a full year, as compared to six months with other fillers approved for the lip. Final results of a Volbella treatmet are seen approximately two weeks after the treatment once the swelling has subsided.
Voluma is another member of the Juvederm family and is designed for mid-face enhancement. Voluma is placed on the cheek bone and in the skin allowing for a rejuvenating lift of the face. By placing Voluma in this area you will see a restoration of the youthful apple of the cheeks. Additionally Voluma pulls up on the structures in the lower face to address smiles lines, marionette lines, jowls, and jawline definition. Results with Voluma are seen right away and most people enjoy their results for up to two years with optimal correction. Dr. Alex usually starts with two syringes of Voluma (one per cheek), a conservative amount. Two weeks after the treatment results are assessed and further enhancement may be provided if desired. If not, most patients return approximately six months later for one syringe or twelve months later for two syringes.
Our final demonstration was Kybella, a new service added this year. Kybella is the first and thus far only FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment for the double chin. The active ingredient in Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a naturally occurring substance produced in the liver used to digest the dietary fat. When injected into the skin Kybella dissolves the fat and the fat is naturally eliminated by the body slowly over time. Most people required two to four Kybella treatments every six to eight weeks, although some people require up to six treatments. Kybella is a great alternative for those who do not want surgery. The best part of it is that the Kybella results are permanent. After your series of Kybella treatments you will not require maintenance treatments as in the case of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, or Restylane.
We wish everyone a happy and healthy Holiday season and new year and look forward to offering even more new treatments in 2017.
