Toenail fungus is a common concern for many people with some estimates saying that it occurs in 10% of the population. Toenail fungus can be infectious and leads to an abnormal appearance of the nail. Traditional medications have a number of possible side effects and are moderately effective. Now with the power of lasers, we are able to treat toenail fungus easily and effectively.
What causes toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus occurs when the fungus gets on the toes and starts to grow. This happens commonly when walking barefoot in areas where it grows well such as public restrooms or gym locker rooms.
How does laser toenail fungus treatment work?
The laser for toenail fungus treatment uses gentle micro-pulses of infrared to deliver energy to the nail bed. The energy gently heats up the nail bed and once enough energy is delivered to the area, the fungus is killed and will no longer grow. As the nail grows over time the affected areas will move further from the base of the nail toward the tip of the nail and eventually full clearance is seen.
How many laser toenail fungus treatments will I need?
Depending on the severity of the infection, most people will require anywhere from one to three laser toenail fungus treatments. Laser toenail fungus treatments are performed every one to three months.
Does the laser toenail fungus treatment hurt?
The laser toenail fungus treatment takes about 15 minutes. You will feel the nail slowly warming up. It is tolerated very well.
When will I see the results of the laser toenail fungus treatment?
Once the toenail fungus treatment is killed, it will no longer grow in the nail. However, the abnormal appearance will be present until the nail grows out completely. This does require patience as it could take up to 12 months to see the final results of the laser toenail fungus treatment.
What can I do to ensure the laser toenail fungus treatment is successful?
Dr. Alex also recommends a topical product that is applied twice daily which will further enhance the results. The toenail fungus grows best in hot and humid environments. Therefore, it is important to prevent this by keeping the feet dry and cool. Wash your feet after exercising or sweating and make sure they are completely dry by using a towel and/or blow dryer. Avoid wearing socks to sleep and avoid walking barefoot in areas such as restrooms and gym locker rooms.
Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing can address a variety of concerns on the skin and we have been getting great results.
What does the Fractional CO2 laser treat?
The Fractional CO2 resurfacing laser treatment addresses many different concerns including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and discolorations. The Fractional CO2 can also treat other things such as surgical scars, acne scars, and stretch marks.
How does the Fractional CO2 laser treatment work?
The Fractional CO2 laser treatment works by creating thousands of tiny holes in the skin and generating heat in the skin. This stimulates the formation of new, fresh, and healthy collagen to replace old and damaged collagen seen in fine lines, wrinkles, surgical scars, acne scars, and stretch marks. The Fractional CO2 laser also treats other concerns such as dark spots and discolorations.
What happens during the Fractional CO2 laser treatment?
Before your Fractional CO2 laser treatment, Dr. Alex recommends using the Alastin Skin Nectar twice daily starting two weeks prior to the treatment and continuing for another two weeks after the treatment. This will help speed up the healing process. The product also stimulates collagen and elastin production to enhance the results. Dr. Alex will prescribe two medications to take by mouth daily for seven days starting one day prior to the Fractional CO2 treatment to prevent infections. On the day of your Fractional CO2 treatment we will apply numbing cream on your skin for one hour prior to the treatment. We will also provide you with medications to keep you comfortable during the Fractional CO2 treatment. These medications may make you sleepy, so it is important to arrange a ride home. After an hour of numbing time, your face will be cleaned with cleansing solutions and eye protection will be placed over your eye. The Fractional CO2 treatment itself takes about 10-15 minutes for the entire face and will take longer if other areas are treated. Most people find the Fractional CO2 treatment very comfortable.
What happens after the Fractional CO2 laser treatment?
After the Fractional CO2 laser treatment, the skin is red and swollen for one to two weeks. We will provide you with aftercare products to keep the skin moist and to speed up the healing process. The healing is faster on the face than on other areas.
What results can I expect from the Fractional CO2 laser?
As seen in the photograph here, significant improvement in the color and texture of the skin can be seen one month after a single Fractional CO2 treatment. This includes dark spots from sun damage, fines lines around the eyes, and enlarged pores. The Fractional CO2 laser treatment will also address deeper wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars, and surgical scars such as from a C-section, breast augmentation, or tummy tuck.
When do you see results from the Fractional CO2 laser?
Initial results are seen approximately one month after the Fractional CO2 treatment and full results are seen three to six months after the Fractional CO2 treatment. This is because it takes time for collagen to grow. Many people see continued results for six to 12 months after the Fractional CO2 treatment.
How many Fractional CO2 laser treatments will I need?
Most people have one to two Fractional CO2 laser treatments and are very happy with their results.
How long do the results from the Fractional CO2 laser last?
Not understanding what Botox does
Before having a cosmetic treatment such as Botox it is important to understand exactly what it does and what it does not do. A lot of this education is done at the in-office consultation, but there is also a lot of information (and misinformation) available online. Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. The most common wrinkles addressed with Botox are the horizontal lines seen on the forehead when we raise our brows, the vertical lines (“frown lines”) seen between the brows when we frown, and the crow’s feet seen around the eyes when we smile or squint.
Being afraid of the results of Botox
One of the most common concerns patients have with Botox treatments is that they do not want to look “done” like some people they see on television or in the news. It is important to understand that you cannot tell if someone has had a “good” Botox treatment. This is because Botox treatments are designed to enhance a person’s look and to appear natural, not as if they had plastic surgery.
Going to the wrong office for a Botox treatment
It is natural to always want the best in any product or service. The most important thing desired is the best result. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of what a good Botox result looks like. This is because a good Botox result should look like no treatment has been done. Instead, after a good Botox treatment you should look refreshed and rested. Many people search for the best value in their Botox treatment, but it is critical to understand that this should not be the most important factor. This is because Botox treatments vary from one office to another office. Botox is not a product or commodity, rather a service that is performed by a medical professional. Just like a haircut must be done by someone with experience and expertise to get the desired result, so does a Botox treatment. Unfortunately, the common adage is true that you get what you pay for. Look for a doctor with specific training and expertise in Botox and other cosmetic treatments. In general, the more training the better; for example doctors have more training than nurses. Look at their before and after photographs as well as third party reviews and testimonials.
Telling the doctor what to do
One of the biggest mistakes people make is telling the doctor what to do when having a Botox treatment. What I mean is not that you want to lift your brows or improve you wrinkles. Instead many people tell the doctor where to place the Botox and how much Botox to use. Each doctor is different and has their own experience and expertise. It is important to follow the doctor’s recommendations in order to get the best results.
Starting Botox treatments too late
Many people think that Botox is a treatment for those in their 50’s or older. This is not the case at all. We have many patients in their 20’s who get Botox treatments. The most common is the person who makes a lot of facial expressions and has developed wrinkles which make her appear older. Additionally, there are a lot of younger people who have Botox treatments for preventive purposes, and this is fine too.
