The A E Skin line of skin care products continues to provide outstanding results for our patients. Dr. Alex designed this line of product to address the most common concerns patients have: uneven color, irregular texture, and acne.
The image shown here is a before and after picture of a 34 year old female who was concerned with her acne and her uneven color. This included dark spots left over from acne breakouts; these are commonly, but incorrectly referred to as scars. She had tried a number of products, none of which worked. She even invested a lot of money in treatments such as PRP, the results of which were disappointing. Understandably, she was hesitant to try new products.
This patient started on the standard line of A E Skin line of skin care products: Brightening Cream, Exfoliating Serum, Triple Antioxidant Serum, and Hydrating Serum. The photograph on the right is after using these products for just two months without having any treatments. She noticed an improvement in her acne, uneven color, and texture. She also enjoyed a youthful glow to her skin. She commented that her coworkers also noticed an improvement in her skin.

The Brightening Cream is our most popular product and we often sell out of it. The Brightening Cream contains three active ingredients: hydroquinone, kojic acid, and retin-A (retinoic acid). Hydroquinone is the strongest brightening agent available and serves to lighten up the dark spots on the skin. Kojic acid is another brightening agent that works by a different mechanism than hydroquinone. Together they provide a powerful punch. Retin-A is a vitamin A derivative that exfoliated, smoothens out the skin surface, helps with acne, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, tightens the skin, and decreases enlarged pores. The Brightening Cream is used at night on a clean, dry face. The Brightening Cream is a prescription-strength medication and is only available for patients who have had a consultation with Dr. Alex in the Encino, CA office.
As its name implies, the Exfolilating Serum gently exfoliates the dead skin cells from the surface. The active ingredient is salicylic acid. It works in a different way from the retin-A. Specifically salicylic acid breaks the glue that holds the dead skin cells together. It works well for all skin types and particularly well for oily skin types. The Acne Max Solution is a modified version of the Exfoliating Serum which contains a higher level of salicylic acid and also includes other products directed at acne. The Exfoliating Serum or Acne Max Solution are used first thing in the morning on a clean, dry face. The Exfoliating Serum and Acne Max Solution are prescription-strength products and are only available for patients who have had a consultation with Dr. Alex in the Encino, CA office.
The Triple Antioxidant Serum is a favorite of many patients. It contains vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid. Vitamins C and E serve as antioxidants, each in a different part of the skin cells. This protects the skin from damage from free radicals that are formed by sun exposure or other insults such as pollution or smoking. Ferulic acid serves to stabilize the vitamin C so that it remains active for every use. In addition to its antioxidant properties, vitamin C also helps to smoothen out uneven color. Some people apply lemon juice to their skin to even out the color; it is the vitamin C in lemon juice that is responsible for this response. Vitamin C is also a cofactor for collagen formation. Collagen is the protein in the skin that is responsible for keeping the skin tight, firm, and youthful in appearance. Formation of new collagen will serve to decrease wrinkles and close enlarged pores. The Triple Antioxidant Serum is used in the morning immediately after the Exfoliating Serum or Acne Max Solution and it is available on our online store.
Approximately two thirds of the skin is composed of water. It is therefore important to have enough water in the skin for appropriate function. There are three steps in maintaining adequate water in the skin. The first is drinking enough water. Dr. Alex recommends drinking at least 8 cups of water each day. The second step is getting that water into the skin. This is what the Hydrating Serum does. The third and final step is trapping that water in the skin by using a good moisturizer on top. The Hydrating Serum is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water. It works well to draw water into the skin to provide the hydration necessary for appropriate skin function. This water helps to fill in fine lines and the product works well in combination with Botox and fillers. Our patients say that it makes their skin feel like silk. Only two or three drops of the Hydrating Serum are required twice daily immediately before moisturizer. The Hydrating Serum is available on our online store.
The Juvederm family of dermal fillers now includes a variety of products which provide natural results when combined.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are products that are used to restore volume in the face. They help rejuvenate the face and provide a youthful and refreshed appearance. The dermal fillers available in the United States include the Juvederm family of products, the Restylane family of products, Radiesse, Sculptra, Belotero, and Bellafill. Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water. They work by drawing water into the skin to provide volume. They have a good safety profile because they can be dissolved if the product is inadvertently placed into a blood vessel.
What is the Juvederm family of dermal fillers?
The Juvederm family of dermal fillers are the most popular dermal fillers in the United States. They are made by Allergan, the same company that makes Botox, Latisse, Kybella, and Skin Medica products. We are happy to participate in the Allergan Brilliant Distinctions Program, a rewards program where patients receive points for receiving any of these treatments or purchasing these products. These points can be used for subsequent treatments. As mentioned above the Juvederm family of fillers are all composed of hyaluronic acid fillers, make them a safe and natural product to use. The original members of this family are Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus. These use a proprietary cross-linking technology called Hyalacross. This is a fancy way of explaining the chemistry in the product. The three newest members of the family include Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella. These use a newer technology called Vycross, which allows them to last longer. Now Dr. Alex recommends these products as they provide longer lasting results and the results are very natural. The difference between Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella is the thickness of the products and what they are used for. Voluma has the highest level of hyaluronic acid, making it the firmest product in this group. Voluma is ideal for restoring lost volume in the upper cheeks and mid-face. Often times an immediate lift can be seen. Volbella, on the other hand, has the lowest amount of hyaluronic acid, making it the softest product in this family. Volbella is ideal for fine lines on and around the lips as well as shaping the borders of the lips. Volbella also works well for to restore lost volume under the eyes. Vollure has an intermediate level of hyaluronic acid. Vollure works well for the nasolabial folds or laugh lines, which go from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, as well as the marionette lines, which are sometimes seen as the continuation of the nasolabial fold to the jawline. Vollure is also great for those wanting more fullness to the lips.
What are the results when the Juvederm products are combined?
When these products are used in combination beautiful results can be achieved. Typically, the results are subtle and natural, providing a rested or refreshed appearance. Dr. Alex recommends starting with a conservative amount of product, as more can always be added later. Conservative amounts usually start at two syringes, or one per side. In the photograph seen here, the patient received two syringes of Voluma (one per side) in the upper cheeks and two syringes of Vollure (one per side) in the nasolabial folds. The scar under her lip on the right side of the photograph was not treated. This patient enjoyed a natural result as seen by the lift in the mid face, improvement of the nasolabial folds, and the appearance of a heart-shaped lower face.
Find out if a chemical peel is exactly what you need to improve your skin’s appearance.
Does the phrase “aging gracefully” seem false? Do you feel like years of sunbathing or not giving your skin the proper care it needs has left you dealing with sun damage, wrinkles and lines, and an uneven skin tone? Are you looking for ways to reverse some of these changes to improve the overall appearance of your skin? If so, then it might be time to ask our Encino, CA, dermatologist, Dr. Alex Eshaghian, about chemical peels.
What is a chemical peel?
During a chemical peel, a special solution is applied to the skin. The purpose of this solution is to remove the outer layer of dead skin to reveal softer, smoother and more radiant skin underneath. The skin won’t immediately peel away during your procedure. The peel will cause a blistering effect, but after a few days the old, dead skin will peel away to show healthy, new skin. Your recovery time will really depend on the intensity of the chemical peel (superficial vs. deep) you choose to get.
What issues can a chemical peel actually address?
A chemical peel can provide a host of awesome benefits for the right candidate including:
- Reducing the appearance of superficial scars, lines and wrinkles
- Improving acne
- Evening out skin tone and reducing the appearance of brown patches, sunspots and age spots
- Boosting the tone, texture, and radiance of your skin
Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?
There are so many different dermatological options out there that it can often be difficult to figure out which one is actually the best one for you. This is where our Encino skin doctor can come in and help you decide. Let’s sit down and chat about your treatment goals. This treatment is great for minor-to-moderate lines, wrinkles, scars and acne but it won’t treat sagging or severely wrinkled skin. By letting us know your goals for treatment we can also determine if other options like cosmetic fillers or a brow lift may also be a great complementary treatment to your chemical peel.
AE Skin Professional Med Spa in Encino, CA, is ready to help you get more youthful skin, whether that’s through a chemical peel, laser resurfacing or dermal fillers. Call us today to find out how we can help you.
