Volbella before and afterAlthough the majority of those undergoing cosmetic treatments are women, more and more men are interested in rejuvenating and enhancing their appearance. Here we discuss the many opportunities for men to improve their appearance in order to look and feel their best. Just like women, men enjoy a natural youthful appearance that improves their confidence and self-esteem.

Skin Care

Skin care is essential for everyone, men and women alike. There are many options available, and a skin care regimen should be customized for each person. For example, some people have more oily skin while others have more dry skin and still others have combination skin. Most men prefer a simple regimen. In such cases, the basic elements include daily sunscreen use along with twice daily cleansing and moisturizing. One of the most popular products for men is the Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen. This is because it goes on easily, feels good on the skin, does not leave a thick white residue on the skin, and contains moisturizers.

Botox

Botox is one of our most popular treatments for both men and women. While some people say Botox has a bad reputation because it gives people a frozen appearance, when done correctly people do not notice that someone has had Botox. Instead, they say that the person looks rested and refreshed. Using appropriate dosing and targeting specific muscles a natural look can be achieved with a Botox treatment. In general men require higher doses of Botox than women. This is because men in general have stronger and larger muscles than women, both on the face and body. Also, the placement of the product on the forehead is usually different for men than women. This is because men usually have more flat brows whereas women prefer arched brows.

Fillers

Dermal fillers restore volume that is lost over time. Such volume loss occurs in different areas on the face and occurs in both men and women. However, it is important to understand the differences between the facial structures of men and women. Specifically, women prefer broad and high cheek bones and a narrow lower face. Men, on the other hand, usually have more volume in the lower face. The photograph here shows a gentleman who received a small amount of Volbella to provide a natural, balanced appearance of the lips.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments can address a variety of concerns on the skin including uneven color, redness, and fine lines and wrinkles. Such changes occur naturally over time and sun damage contributes to it. Depending on the concern, various lasers can be used. For example, the IPL photofacial works well for uneven color and redness, while laser skin tightening works well for loose skin, and fractional laser treatments work well for irregular texture.

The Forever Young BBL IPL Photofacial is an outstanding treatment to address a number of concerns such as uneven color and redness on the skin. With any treatment, there are potential complications. One such complication with IPL photofacial treatments is called striping, which is discussed here.

What is an IPL photofacial treatment?

Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial before and afterIPL stands for intense pulsed light. It is also called a photofacial, or IPL photofacial. The treatment works by using bright light to target and destroy unwanted pigment and blood in the skin. This can be seen as dark spots, sun spots, age spots, generalized or diffuse redness, rosacea, and broken capillaries. The pigment and blood absorb the light and are heated and consequently destroyed. The IPL photofacial treatment takes a few minutes. Sometimes darks spots get darker before they get lighter and they may or may not flake off the skin surface. There may be redness on the skin for a day or two after an IPL photofacial treatment. Otherwise, there is no recovery time after an IPL photofacial treatment; most people resume their normal activities right away. Dr. Alex recommends an initial series of six monthly IPL photofacial treatments followed by one maintenance IPL photofacial treatment every three months thereafter.

What is striping?

Striping is a possible complication after an IPL photofacial characterized by the appearance of either dark or light stripes on the skin. This can occur as a result of an IPL photofacial treatment. During the IPL photofacial treatment, the tip on the device is placed on the skin to pulse the light. The tip is usually rectangular or square in shape. After a pulse, the tip is moved to the adjacent portion of the skin which has not yet been treated. If there is space between these areas, there will be certain areas of untreated skin. In such cases, the unwanted pigment may be cleared in the treated areas, but not in these untreated areas, making it look like stripes of untreated dark skin between usually larger striped of treated even colored skin. This is a result of not having enough overlap between pulses. On the other hand, if there is overlap from one pulse to the next adjacent pulse, the areas of overlap are effectively treated twice. If the settings are aggressive burns and discoloration can be seen on these thin areas of overlap, also creating striping.

What is the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatment?

The Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial is an IPL photofacial device made by Sciton which provides superior results compared with other IPL photofacial devices. The Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton has a number of unique features when compared to IPL photofacial devices by other manufacturers which provide both superior results combined with increased safety to avoid potential complications such as striping. The tip of the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton device is the largest on the market and pulses can be repeated very quickly. This allows the skin to be treated much more quickly than IPL photofacial treatments using other devices. To take advantage of this benefit, Dr. Alex treats the skin with multiple passes using lower settings using the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton. This allows for safe overlap of pulses without the possibility of striping. The passes are performed in different directions, allowing for full overlap without missing areas of the skin. When using the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton, Dr. Alex has never seen striping after having performed thousands of such treatments. But this has been seen with other devices. Another feature of the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton is that it has many different filters that can be changes quickly and easily. This allows for treatment of different skin types, which is not possible with other IPL photofacial devices. It can also be used to treat acne, unwanted hair, and loose skin using the SkinTyte. Additionally, the cooling temperature of the tip of the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton can be adjusted by one degree Celsius. This allows for a tremendous amount of versatility and safety when treating darker skin types. Darker skin types are more likely to get darker after a treatment, but when the temperature of the device is reduced this risk is minimized. Finally, the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton uses adaptors which can be placed on the tip to decrease the size of the treated area. This allows for the treatment of small areas and single spots such as age spots and broken capillaries with higher settings without affecting the surrounding skin (which can cause burns). For all of these reasons, the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial by Sciton provides outstanding results combined with comfort and safety.

Dr. Alex has performed thousands of Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatments with outstanding results. He has also developed multiple combination treatments such as the Soft and Smooth Rejuvenation and Tight and Bright Rejuvenation to make the results even better. Dr. Alex has performed over 10,000 total cosmetic treatments with many satisfied patients. Contact us to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Alex in our Encino, CA office.

The IPL photofacial is one of our most popular treatments because it can treat a variety of concerns such as uneven color, dark spots, sun spots, redness, and broken capillaries. Although the treatment can provide outstanding results side effects are possible if the device is not used appropriately.

How does an IPL photofacial work?

Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial before and after pictureThe IPL photofacial works by using bright light to target and destroy unwanted pigment and redness in the skin. As the light passes through the skin it is absorbed by the pigment and blood. This heats up the pigment and blood and destroys it. There are many settings that can be adjusted to customize the treatment for each person during an IPL photofacial treatment. Those with darker skin have a higher risk of complications and therefore more conservative settings must be used for each IPL photofacial treatment. In such cases more IPL photofacial treatments are performed and results are seen more slowly. The therapeutic window for the IPL photofacial is narrow. The therapeutic window is the difference between the minimum settings required for improvement and the settings which cause damage. The possible damage in the case of the IPL photofacial includes burns, scars, and discolorations. It is therefore important to find a good doctor to perform the IPL photofacial treatment. At A E Skin Dr. Alex uses the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton.

What is difference about the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial?

The Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton is an outstanding device that provides superior results for all skin types because of its versatility. Dr. Alex is able to adjust many different settings on the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton for each person. Like most IPL devices on the market, the fluence, or energy settings, can be adjusted on the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton. However, unlike other devices, the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton has a number of features that make it the best device available. For example, the filter is easily changed to change the color of light used. This is important because lower wavelengths (colors) can be more aggressive and are therefore avoided in those with darker skin types. There are seven different filters that can be used and easily changed on the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton. Most other devices have only one or two and usually the entire handpiece needs to be changed, increasing the treatment time. The spot size is very large and the repetition rate is fast, allowing for large areas to be treated quickly when using the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton. This also allows for the area to be treated with multiple passes at lower settings rather than with a single pass at higher settings. This is an important advantage of the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton because it minimizes the risks for adverse events discussed above. Other settings that can be very easily and specifically adjusted on the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton include the pulse width and temperature. The pulse width is the time the light is on; this is generally measured in milliseconds. Unlike most devices which usually have two options, mane options are available on the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton. This allows for higher safety using more conservative settings while also having the option to make the treatment more aggressive if necessary. The temperature can be adjusted by one degree Celsius on the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton. Increased levels of cooling allow for higher safety and decreased risks for complications. Most devices have only one or two levels of cooling. Finally, the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial device by Sciton has easy to use adaptors which allow for treatments of small spots without affecting any normal surrounding skin.

Botox is one of the most common treatments requested and performed in our office. One of the most common questions is what areas should be treated with Botox and what dose of Botox should be used. These questions will be addressed here.

Botox Information

Botox before and afterBotox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. The most common areas of treatment with Botox include the horizontal lines seen on the forehead when we raise our eyebrows, the vertical lines seen between the eyebrows seen when we frown, and the crow’s feet seen around the eyes when we smile or squint. When injected into the skin, Botox will relax the muscles and smoothen out the wrinkles. With any injection, there are risks including pain, bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness, and infection. At A E Skin, we take special precautions to minimize these risks. For example, Dr. Alex has developed a painless Botox injection technique using cold air and our new tool the Beauty Bar, which serves as a vibrating distractor. Full results are seen two weeks after a Botox treatment, so patience is important. Most people enjoy the results of their Botox treatment for three to four months. After that a maintenance Botox treatment is recommended. After a Botox treatment, Dr. Alex recommends avoiding heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours and avoiding lying flat for four hours.

While the middle face, lower face, and neck are routinely treated with Botox, the upper face is the most common area treated with Botox. In order to maintain a harmonious balance of the upper face and eyebrow position, it is important to treat multiple muscle groups with Botox. To understand how this is performed requires a basic understanding of the muscles that move the eyebrows.

Muscle Groups in the Upper Face

The muscle that raises the eyebrow is called the frontalis and is located in the upper forehead immediately above the eyebrows. The muscles that lower the eyebrows include the glabella complex between the eyebrows centrally and the upper outer portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle at the corners of the brows. When the frontalis muscle is relaxed with Botox, it makes it more difficult to raise the eyebrows and the position of the eyebrows may move downward. On the other hand, if the glabella complex and the outer orbicularis oculi are relaxed with Botox, it makes it more difficult to lower the eyebrows. In order to maintain a harmonious balance in the position of the brows, it is important to treat all of these muscle groups with Botox. This generally requires a dose of 50 to 60 units. While many people find that this is a high dose, it is actually an appropriate dose of Botox for this region.
