Skin tightening is one of the most popular treatments we offer. With the fractional CO2 laser, a significant improvement can be seen for those with loose skin, saggy skin, and wrinkles. The recovery after a traditional fractional CO2 laser treatment includes up to two weeks of redness and swelling. Dr. Alex has designed a new technique to deliver the energy without resulting in any recovery time.
What is the modified fractional CO2 laser treatment?
The modification designed by Dr. Alex gently heats up the skin without creating the thousands of microscopic holes in the skin associated with traditional fractional CO2 laser resurfacing. This stimulates your skin to form its own natural, new, fresh, and healthy collagen which reduces wrinkles, decreases pore size, and provides a radiant glow to the skin. The holes in the skin seen after a traditional ablative treatment slowly close over time; this is why there is a recovery period where the skin is red and swollen for up to two weeks.
What can modified fractional CO2 laser treatment treat?
The modified fractional CO2 laser treatment can be used to treat a variety of concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven color, acne scars, and stretch marks. It can be combined with other treatments such as the Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial to enhance the results. This is combination designed by Dr. Alex and is called the Tight and Bright Rejuvenation. Dr. Alex more recently designed a new combination treatment called the Trinity Rejuvenation which includes a Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatment, a modified fractional CO2 laser treatment, and Micro Laser Peel. The Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatment uses bright light to target and destroy unwanted pigment and redness in the skin. The Micro Laser Peel removes a thin layer of dead skin cells to exfoliate and create a soft texture. Together, this combination provides outstanding results with minimal recovery time.
Is the modified fractional CO2 laser treatment painful?
The modified fractional CO2 laser treatment slowly and gently heats up the skin. At A E Skin patient comfort is a top priority so we blow cold air on the skin to keep you comfortable during the treatment.
What will happen during the modified fractional CO2 laser treatment?
Before the modified fractional CO2 laser treatment, the face is cleansed with special cleansing solutions and metal eye shields are applied to protect your eyes. Cold air is blown on the skin when the treatment starts. The entire face can be treated in less than five minutes. After the treatment, the eye protection is removed and we apply sunscreen to the face. A video demonstration can be seen below.

What is the recovery time after a modified fractional CO2 laser treatment?
The new modified fractional CO2 laser treatment is non-ablative, which means it does not remove any portion of the skin and therefore there is no recovery time. It is an ideal treatment for those who want to tighten the skin but do not have a prolonged time to set aside for recovery. The settings can be adjusted so that it can be performed on any skin type and it can be used on just about any area of the skin.
What should I do after a modified fractional CO2 laser treatment?
After a modified fractional CO2 laser treatment, the skin will be sensitive to light so it is important to protect it using sunscreen every day. Other things to avoid for 24 hours after the treatment which can damage the skin include heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise. The skin may be red or hot for a day or two after the treatment and cold compresses such as ice packs can be applied for comfort.
How many modified fractional CO2 laser treatments will I need?
A series of six to eight weekly modified fractional CO2 laser treatments is recommended and results are seen slowly over time. After this initial series of treatments, a single treatment is recommended every three months for maintenance.
When will I see results after a modified fractional CO2 laser treatment?
The modified fractional CO2 laser treatment stimulates the body to produce its own collagen. This takes time and therefore results are not seen overnight after a single treatment. Results are seen slowly over a course of treatments. Full results are seen one to two months after a series of treatments.
Dr. Alex attended The Aesthetic Innovation Tour at the London Hotel in West Hollywood from Friday December 15, 2017 through Sunday December 17, 2017. This was another outstanding educational event where Dr. Alex learned new techniques for laser and injectable treatments.
The event was kicked off with a seminar given by Dr. Alex’s friend and colleague Dr. Kian Karimi of Rejuva Medical Aesthetics in Brentwood, CA. He spoke on Sculpsure, a non-invasive body contouring device and PicoSure, a device for pigment and tattoo removal. The weekend consisted of a variety of talks by world renown plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Mulholland of Spa Medica in Toronto, ON Canada. Dr. Mulholland has over 20 years of experience in the field of cosmetic medicine and shared insights on a variety of laser treatments such as IPL and fractional CO2 as well as injectable treatments such as Botox, Kybella, and fillers such as Voluma. Dr. Alex was able to take away a number of valuable pearls such as modifications of settings for fractional CO2 laser treatments for even better results and the use of fillers in other areas. The event featured a number of live demonstrations by Dr. Mulholland including liposuction of the neck, IPL, fractional CO2, Botox, Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella. He also spoke about marketing techniques to better serve the needs of our patients.
Dr. Alex gained a great deal of knowledge from this educational opportunity and looks forward to future events to learn about the newest technologies and techniques in aesthetic medicine.
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Vollure are some of the most common products we use for facial enhancement. New products become available regularly. Here we discuss the difference between Juvederm and Vollure, as well as other dermal filler products.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella are products that are used to restore lost volume in the skin. They have been used for many years for the smile lines, also called the laugh lines, parentheses lines, or nasolabial folds, the wrinkles that go from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Sometimes these wrinkles continue all the way down to the jawline, what are called the marionette lines. Fillers are also used to restore the apple of the cheeks, fill in hollowing in the temples, provide volume to the lips, and enhance the chin. The can also be used off the face, most commonly to restore lost volume to the backs of the hands.
What are dermal fillers made of?
Dermal fillers can be made of many different substances. The most popular are those with hyaluronic acid as the active ingredient. These include Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, the Restylane family of products, Belotero, and Revanesse. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water, allowing it to draw water into the skin to fill in wrinkles. The great things about hyaluronic acid is that is can be dissolved if the results are not as desired or if there is an adverse effect. No other product has this safety feature. Radiesse is another dermal filler whose active ingredient is calcium hydroxyappetite, which works well to restore bony structures such as the cheeks. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid. This does not volumize by itself; rather it stimulates the skin to form collagen. Bellafill is another dermal filler; it’s active ingredient is poly-methylmethacrlate. Bellafill lasts many years. There are also many other products available overseas but not in the United States. Unlike the hyaluronic acid products, Radiesse, Sculptra, and Bellafill are not reversible.
Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella have some distinct advantages over other fillers. First, they are all made of hyaluronic acid, meaning they are reversible, providing a high degree of safety. Second, unlike some of the other hyaluronic acid fillers, they contain lidocaine, which numbs the skin. Third, they provide patients with Brilliant Distinctions points. The Brilliant Distinctions program is a rewards program developed by Allergan, makes of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, Kybella, and Latisse, where patients receive points for each treatment which can be used toward discounts at subsequent treatments. The most unique feature of Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella is that they use a new technology called Vycross, in which the hyaluronic acid has special cross-linking. This is a fancy way of saying that patients enjoy their results longer than other products.
Juvederm was the original dermal filler produced by Allergan, makes of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, Kybella, and Latisse. Juvederm is made using an older technology called Hylacross. The new fillers Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella use the Vycross technology, which allows patients to enjoy their results for longer.
We know that Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella all use the Vycross technology which allows patients to enjoy their results for longer. But what are the specific differences between these three products. All of these products are identical except for the amount of hyaluronic acid they contain. Voluma contains the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid in this group (20 mg/mL). Volbella contains the lowest amount of hyaluronic acid in this group (15 mg/mL). And Voluma contains an intermediate amount of hyaluronic acid (17.5 mg/mL). What this means is that they are used for different concerns. Since Voluma has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, it provides more lift and is ideal for restoring the apple of the cheeks, filling in temporal hollows, and enhancing a weak chin. Volbella has the lowest amount of hyaluronic acid and does not provide as much volume or puffiness, making it ideal for fine enhancement of the lips such as filling fines lines on or around the lips and defining the lips, as well as for placement in the tear troughs, the hollows which can appear under the eyes. Vollure is ideal for the smile lines and for volumizing the lips. The video shown here demonstrates a liquid facelift, where all three of these products are used in different areas in combination with Botox.

Don’t let dry skin get you down this winter season. Keep this problem at bay.
Whether you consider yourself a snow bunny or you are someone who spends the cold months pressed up against the fireplace, there are many habits that can lead to dry skin. If you are someone who battles dry skin often our Encino, CA, dermatologist, Dr. Alex Eshaghian, has simple solutions for combating this unpleasant issue.
Avoid Hot Water
We know how enticing a steaming hot shower or bath can be, particularly if you just came in from the frigid outdoors; however, if you are someone who deals with dry skin then you truly want to heed this warning and stay away from lingering hot showers. Instead, opt for warm water and limit the amount of time in the shower to no more than 10 minutes.
Use Gentle Products
Harsh cleansers can strip skin of the natural oils it needs. If you are someone who deals with dry skin pretty consistently then you’ll want to take a look at the products you are using on your skin. Look for sensitive, fragrance-free skincare products for both your face and your body and avoid products that contain alcohol. If you are at a loss for what products are right for dry skin, our Encino skin doctor would be happy to provide some recommendations.
Don’t Be Aggressive
A lot of people think that in order to get skin clean they need to scrub and scrub. While a squeaky clean may be okay when it comes to your kitchen floors it shouldn’t be for your skin. Always take a gentle approach to cleansing your skin. After washing your face never rub your face clean. Instead, blot skin dry with a soft towel.
Don’t Skimp on Moisturizer
Moisturizer is something that everyone should use to keep skin feeling and looking supple. Even those who don’t deal with dry skin should still consider using a light moisturizer, particularly during drier, colder months. Of course, if you are dealing with dry skin then you will want to use a thicker emollient. Apply right after getting out of the shower or immediately after washing your face.
If you are having difficulty tackling your dry skin this winter, then it’s time you turned to AE Skin in Encino, CA, for the answers you need to get your skin under control. Call us today to learn more about what we can do for you!
On Thursday November 30, 2017 A E Skin held it’s seventh annual Holiday Party in the office. It was a lot of fun, as always. We had a packed house with over 30 guests in attendance. Our guests enjoyed light refreshments courtesy of Allergan, makers of Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, Kybella, and Latisse. We also had support from Alastin Skin Care, makers of the Skin Nectar and Restorative Skin Complex. As always, the Red Carpet was out, allowing for outstanding photo opportunities for our guests. The best dressed won a Photo-Fractional Rejuvenation treatment. We were excited to offer exclusive specials on all products and services; and since we had such a great response we are continuing these promotions until the end of the year. This year we had two models receive treatments at the demonstrations. The first model received a liquid facelift using 44 units of Botox, two syringes of Voluma, two syringes of Vollure, and two syringes of Volbella. Results are seen instantly with this 15-minute treatment. The second received a fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatment to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Her treatment also took about 15 minutes and she was very comfortable throughout the treatment. After the demonstrations we held a raffle with many prizes including products such as Elta MD, Alastin, and A E Skin as well as treatments valued at over $2,000. Everyone in attendance received a gift bag which included a full size A E Skin Green Tea Essentials Nourishing Moisturizer valued at $125, samples of Elta MD sunscreens, a copy of Dr. Alex’s new book Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Botox, a pen, and brochures of some treatments. We would like to thank our guests, for attending, our staff for their support, and our partners from Allergan, Elta MD, and Alastin. We had a great time again this year and look forward to more events in the future.
