One of the most important aspects of facial rejuvenation is providing a harmonious balance to the shape and structure of the face. Injectable treatments such as Botox and fillers (including Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, and Juvederm) focus on improvement of the upper face and the mid-face. However, many people are also concerned about the appearance of the lower face. Now with Kybella, we have a treatment for jawline rejuvenation.
What happens to the jawline over time?
As we mature there are a number of changes that occur in the face. The structure and shape of bones change and move around. Fat is gained or lost and can be deposited in certain areas. And the amount of collagen in the skin decreases over time, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Together this leads to a blunting of the jawline. We lose the sharp and defined jawline that is associated with youth and beauty. The causes of these changes include age, sun damage, weight gain, and genetics. While we can control our weight and our sun exposure, unfortunately we cannot control the other two factors. Now with Kybella, we have a treatment that can rejuvenate the jawline to provide a more beautiful appearance.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is the first and thus far only FDA-approved, non-surgical, injectable treatment for what is called submental fullness, or more commonly referred to as the double chin. The active ingredient in Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a naturally occurring salt produced in the body that is used to digest the dietary fat. When injected into the skin, Kybella will dissolve the fat and it is naturally eliminated over time. What patients love most about Kybella is that the results are permanent. Unlike Botox and fillers such as Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, and Juvederm where periodic maintenance treatments are required, with Kybella once the series of treatments is complete, your body is no longer able to store nor accumulate fat in the area. Therefore, maintenance treatments are not required with Kybella.
What happens during a Kybella treatment?
The Kybella treatment is very easy. We start by taking baseline photographs in multiple positions to monitor our patients’ progress. Then we apply numbing cream on the area and let it sit for about 15 minutes, after which point it is cleaned off the skin. Markings are made on the skin with a pencil and a special grid to indicate where the product is to be placed. Depending on the person and how much Kybella is used, anywhere from 20 to 60 pinches are performed. The Kybella treatment itself only takes a couple of minutes and we use a painless technique using cold air and a vibrating distractor called the beauty bar to maximize our patients’ comfort. A demonstration of the Kybella treatment is shown in the video below. Immediately after the Kybella treatment a burning sensation can be felt for about 15 minutes and we provide ice packs to control this sensation. Swelling is seen for one to two weeks after the Kybella treatment; this means that the treatment is working. This swelling from Kybella may make swallowing difficult during this time and those with difficulty swallowing at baseline area cautioned before undergoing a Kybella treatment. Sometimes lumps and bumps are formed, which resolve slowly over time. Kybella should not be used in an area of infection. Kybella has not been tested on women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast feeding; therefore Kybella treatment is delayed until breast feeding is discontinued in these women. A series of two to six Kybella treatments is recommended and treatments are performed every three months for ideal results.
What is new with Kybella?
When the pivotal studies were performed using Kybella to get clearance from the FDA, with each treatment two vials were used in a small area and treatments were performed every four weeks for up to six treatments. This type of consistency is required to get any drug approved by the FDA. However, now that doctors are using Kybella more frequently we are incorporating some changes. For example, for those with a higher level of submental fullness three or even four vials of Kybella are being used in each session. We have found techniques to reduce the swelling after a Kybella treatment. This includes avoiding salty foods, strenuous exercise, and alcohol consumption for the first few days after a Kybella treatment. We also apply slings to wrap around the neck and top of the head in which ice packs can be placed. When laser skin tightening treatments are performed before or after the treatment, the overlying skin becomes tight and reduces the swelling after a Kybella treatment. We have also found that lumps and bumps may last more than four weeks. When the lumps and bumps are still there during a second or third Kybella treatment, the product is not able to spread to the entire area and the treatment is less effective. Increasing the interval between the Kybella treatments allows for these lumps and bumps to resolve more completely providing for a better treatment. Finally, the Kybella treatment area was initially limited to a small square under the chin in the central portion of the neck. But now we are expanding the area and placing Kybella further down and on the sides of the neck, which provides better results.
We are also using Kybella on other areas. One of the most common areas Kybella is now being used is called the bra fat. This is the area just under the underarms on the upper outer portion of the breast. Women commonly have excess fat in this area which can stick out of a bra and produce an undesired appearance. This can also occur on the back under the underarms. Kybella can also be used in the belly for excess fat in the area as well as for fat above the knees. It is important to understand that in larger areas more product will be required.
As the winter is ending and the spring is beginning, it’s time to think about shaping up your body for the summer. Here we talk about laser skin tightening and how it can help you get in shape to wear a bikini in a few months.
Why does the skin become loose?
In youth we have an abundance of collagen in the skin. Collagen is the protein that keeps the skin firm, tight, and youthful in appearance. As we mature the amount of collagen decreases naturally and with sun damage. This leads to loose skin, sagging, and wrinkles and can occur anywhere on the body. The area on the body that concerns most patients is the face. However, the appearance of the rest of the body is very important, especially as the warmer months are upcoming and more skin is exposed.
How does laser skin tightening work?
With laser skin tightening we can tighten the skin and decrease the appearance of wrinkles. Laser skin tightening works by using gentle micro-pulses of infrared light to slowly warm up the deeper layers of the skin. This triggers the skin to form its own natural, new, fresh, and healthy collagen. As a result, wrinkles will be decreased and the skin will appear tighter as seen in the before and after picture shown here.
What is the laser skin tightening treatment like?
The laser skin tightening treatment is very easy. Numbing cream is not necessary because the laser skin tightening treatment itself is completely painless. After photographs are taken the area is cleansed and gel is applied to the skin. The laser is passed back and forth on the area to warm the skin to a specific target temperature and is kept at that temperature for a few minutes. The laser skin tightening treatment takes anywhere from ten to 30 minutes depending on the size of the area. The laser skin tightening treatment is repeated six to eight times every week and improvement is seen slowly over the course of this time. After the initial series a single laser skin tightening treatment is recommended once every three months. This will keep the collagen stimulated and thereby keep the skin tight.
Laser Skin Tightening Demonstration
There is no recovery time after a laser skin tightening treatment. The area may be red and/or swollen for a few hours. But most people resume their normal activities right away.
Laser technology has come a long way. Every year new applications are described. Recently lasers have been used for feminine rejuvenation both internally and externally to tighten the skin, provide a youthful appearance, tighten internal structures that loosen up over time and with childbirth, improve lubrication, and provide increased satisfaction and confidence. Now lasers are being used for male enhancement as well without the need for oral prescription medications.
Laser light has a tremendous effect on the skin. Not only does it make the appearance better on the surface, but there are a number of other things that go on deeper in the skin. A study by Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr., MD demonstrated that light from an IPL (intense pulsed light) source can actually change the genes that are expressed in the skin. The genes that are expressed after these treatments are the same genes that are expressed in youthful skin. The process by which this occurs has not yet been determined, but the results are obvious. There is something that goes on in the skin that affects things. This power is used or feminine rejuvenation with the benefits described above.
Similar to feminine rejuvenation, for male enhancement, the light is applied to the genital area which heats up the area. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and is very comfortable. The benefits include increased size and girth of the penis, firmer erections, stronger ejaculation, and increased pleasure and confidence. The improvement can be seen within a few days. An initial series of three treatments performed once per month is recommended.
Do you want your legs to look sexy for the summer? Do you have unsightly legs veins you want gone? Fortunately, we are able to remove leg veins safely and effectively with laser leg vein treatments.
What causes the appearance of leg veins?
Leg veins can be caused by a number of factors such as genetics, age, and lifestyle. For example, those that stand on their feet for prolonged periods are more prone to forming leg veins. Also, women who often wear high heels form leg veins more frequently. This is because gravity pulls the blood downward toward the feet, making it difficult to bring the blood back to the heart. As a result, leg veins are formed.
It is important to understand that those people that develop leg veins are more likely to form new leg veins later. This often happens after a leg vein treatment and people think that the treatment did not work. Most of the time, however, these are new veins that are forming which require treatment.
How does a laser leg vein treatment work?
With the use of laser technology, we are able to remove unwanted leg veins without injections or surgery. Laser leg vein treatment works very similar to laser hair removal. But instead of targeting the pigment in the hair, the blood in the veins are targeted. The blood absorbs the energy from the laser pulse, heats up, and destroys the vessel.
The laser leg vein treatment is fast, safe, and comfortable. It only takes a few minutes to treat a small area. We now use a cold chill plate to keep the skin comfortable during the treatment in addition to the cold air and our vibrating distractor called the beauty bar. Most people describe the sensation as a tiny pinch and they tolerate it very well. Depending on the individual, anywhere from one to three laser leg vein treatments may be required and laser leg vein treatments are performed every two to three months.
What should I do after a laser laser leg vein treatment?
After a laser leg vein treatment, the vein may change color, either darker or lighter. Sometimes a dark pigmentation can be seen in the area which goes away on its own. The are may be red or swollen for a few hours; applying cold compresses such as ice packs will reduce any redness or swelling. The veins will not disappear right away; rather it can take weeks to see improvement and patience is important.
What results can I expect after a laser leg vein treatment?
The results with a laser leg vein treatment are outstanding and they provide many women and men with the confidence to show off their legs by wearing shorts and swimsuits in the summer.
