It’s not always necessary to default to a facelift or other invasive plastic surgery procedure to improve your skin’s appearance. A treatment chemical peelcalled a chemical peel may be all that you need. Find out more about chemical peels and the other ways a specialist at A E Skin in Encino, CA, can make your face look younger, fresher, and smoother.

What Is a Chemical Peel?
As the name suggests, a chemical peel involves peeling a layer of skin off the face so that new cells can emerge. A special acidic solution is applied to the skin that gently removes the damaged layer of skin over the course of about a week. The treatment used at A E Skin is called the A E Skin Red Carpet Peel.

Chemical Peel Benefits
The main benefit of a chemical peel is that you do not have to go under the knife in order to get rid of skin imperfections. It provides benefits for patients who have fine wrinkles, sun damage, smile lines, and scars. It helps smooth out rough patches on the skin. Patients who have stubborn acne scars and skin discolorations may also benefit from this treatment. If you’re interested in an overall facial rejuvenation, this procedure can do wonders.

Your Chemical Peel Appointment
A chemical peel is completed in a 15-minute session with your Encino skin doctor. The skin is gently washed in preparation for the treatment and photos are taken so that you can see the change. Though you may feel a tingling sensation as the acid solution is applied, you should experience minimal discomfort during the appointment because it contains a numbing agent. After the procedure, the skin will peel off and may look red or irritated. It’s important to follow aftercare instructions closely. You may have to come in for about six treatments to get the results you’re looking for.

Schedule a Skin Session
You can revitalize your skin’s appearance with a chemical peel or another skin treatment at A E Skin in Encino, CA. Schedule a visit with Dr. Alex Eshaghian and his staff today by calling 818-835-1833.

Tags: Botox

Clear faceBotox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available and now we are using it for another indication: to decrease the appearance of pores.

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified protein used for a number of different purposes. Traditionally Botox has been used to address wrinkles associated with facial expressions. These include the horizontal lines seen on the upper forehead when raising the eyebrows, the vertical lines seen between the eyebrows when frowning, and the crow’s feet seen around the eyes when smiling. Botox works by relaxing the muscles and smoothening out the overlying wrinkles.

How does Botox work for pores?

One of the side effects that people notice when they get Botox to treat their wrinkles is an improvement in the appearance of the pores. The Botox can also decrease production of oil in the glands to reduce the size of the pores and to treat oily skin. For such a purpose Botox is used slightly differently. The Botox is diluted more than normal and spread out over the skin surface. Therefore, there are many injection points rather than just a few. Also, the Botox injections are placed in the very surface layers of the skin so that it can best reach the oil glands, in contrast to deeper placement of Botox when used to relax muscles. Usually about 40 units of Botox are used for the entire face. The results of such a Botox treatment are seen in a few days and most people enjoy their results for three to four months.

Alastin Hydratint sunscreeThe single most important product recommended for skin health is sunscreen. There are many, many sunscreens available on the market and it is important to find a product that works well. Everyone’s skin is different and not all products are ideal for everyone. But the new Hydratint sunscreen by Alastin is a product that works well for many people.

Why is sunscreen important?

Light from the sun damages the skin in many ways. When light hits the skin, it forms free radicals. These are small molecules that affect the skin at the cellular level, damaging the DNA and proteins. The proteins that maintain the structure of the skin such as collagen and elastin become damaged, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. The amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases, leading to dry and dehydrated skin. Production of melanin is stimulated, leading to the formation of dark spots. The DNA is damaged, which increases the risk of skin cancer. All of these things are undesirable. Therefore, it is critical to protect ourselves from the sun.

What should I look for in a sunscreen?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Also look for UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) protection. This protects against two kinds of UV (ultraviolet rays): UVA rays which cause aging and UVB rays which cause burns. It is important to apply sunscreen every day, even if it is cold or overcast, because the sun’s rays can penetrate through clouds. There are two types of sunscreen ingredients: physical and chemical. Physical ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These reflect the light from the sun and cause minimal irritation to the skin. They also block both UVA and UVB rays. There are a variety of chemical sunscreen ingredients. These absorb the light from the sun so that is does not damage the skin. These should be applied 30 minutes prior to going outside. Some chemical sunscreens can irritate the skin, especially for those who are sensitive. This is particularly important after laser treatments and chemical peels. Therefore, physical sunscreens are ideal for post-procedure.

May new sunscreens provide a number of additional benefits. For example, some include ingredients to hydrate the skin. This allows the product to work as a moisturizer and sunscreen in one. Others include a tint, allowing for the product to work as a primer or foundation. This makes it easy to apply skin care products for those with busy lifestyles who do not have too much time in the mornings. Some of the physician-dispensed sunscreens also include other products such as antioxidants to provide further protection and to rejuvenate the skin.

What is the Alastin Hydratint sunscreen?

The Alastin Hydratint sunscreen is our newest sunscreen and is quickly becoming one of our most popular products. The Alastin Hydratint sunscreen is a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which makes it safe for those with sensitive skin and for those who have recently had a laser treatment. The SPF is 36 and it has UVA and UVB protection. The Alastin Hydratint sunscreen also contains a number of antioxidants which protects the skin from environmental pollution as well as products to hydrate the skin. Finally, the Alastin Hydratint sunscreen has a light tint that is compatible with most skin types to provide coverage and reduce the need for more makeup.
