Botox for the Neck

Did you know that Botox can be used for the neck? This has become an increasingly popular treatment over the last few years.

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified protein used to treat wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Botox can also be used for other things such as to decrease the appearance of vertical bands on the neck. Botox works by relaxing muscles and smoothening wrinkles or improving the look of vertical neck bands. With any injection there are risks such as pain, bleeding, bruising, infection, redness, swelling, and tenderness. We take special precautions to minimize these. Dr. Alex uses a painless Botox injection technique he designed to make the treatment easy. You’ll see the results of your Botox treatment as early as a few days later and you’ll enjoy your results for three to four months. At that point, Dr. Alex recommends a maintenance Botox treatment. After a Botox treatment, avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours and maintain an upright posture without bending forward or lying flat for four hours. At A E Skin we participate in the Brilliant Distinctions program by Allergan, makers of Botox. This is a rewards program where you get points for each Botox treatment. You can use these points towards a discount at your next Botox treatment.

What are vertical neck bands?

There is a thin muscle in the neck called the platysma which goes from the collar bone in the upper chest all the way up to the jawline and lower face. When you contract this muscle, it pulls the lower face down. People contract the platysma muscle when making certain facial expressions or when speaking. Some people use it more than others. Like any other muscles, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. When this muscle gets strong you can see the vertical bands of the muscle in the neck when you contract. In some people the muscle is so strong that you can see the vertical neck bands at rest. Since the muscle pulls down on the lower face, it can increase the appearance of jowls on the jawline, making you look older.

How does Botox work for vertical neck bands?

Botox works on vertical neck bands the same way it works for wrinkles in the face: by relaxing muscles. In this case Botox relaxes the platysma muscle in the neck. When relaxed by Botox, you won’t see your vertical neck bands as much. This makes your neck look younger. Also, by relaxing the muscle with Botox, the muscle will not pull down on the lower face. This releases your lower face from the downward forces and can lift your lower face and improve your jawline definition. This Botox treatment works really well in combination with other treatments such as Voluma in the mid-face or jawline, Kybella for the double chin, and laser skin tightening treatments for the lower face and neck.
