Filling the lips is a popular treatment to add volume to the lips for a full appearance. We naturally lose volume in various areas of the face over time, and one of these area is the lips. Now the volume and shape of the lips can be enhanced with dermal fillers such as Juvéderm.
How does Juvéderm work in the lips?
Juvéderm works by restoring the volume in the lips. Juvéderm is an injectable product made of hyaluronic acid that is placed in the lips. The great thing is that the treatment can be targeted to meet your goals. For example if you have more volume loss in the upper lip, more Juvéderm can be added there. With the perfect proportions, the size of the lower lip is slightly thicker than the upper lip. Also the volume can be targeted to the center of the lips if that is your goal. The cupid's bow in the center of the upper lip can be enhanced and the borders of the lips can be shaped.
When will I see the results with Juvéderm in the lips?
The great thing about Juvéderm is that you see the results right away. There is always some swelling from the injection itself which lasts up to two weeks. At that time the final results are seen. This is when you can return to the office to see your before and after pictures. You can also assess your lips to see if you have achieved the results you want or if you would like more enhancement.
How long will the results last with Juvéderm?
Everyone is different and each person's body metabolizes the product at a different rate. Most people enjoy the results of Juvéderm in their lips for approximately six months. That is a good time for a maintenance treatment. In other areas Juvéderm lasts longer but since there is a lot of movement in the lips when eating, speaking, and breathing it is metabolized faster.
How much Juvéderm will I need for my lips?
Dr. Alex always recommends a conservative approach. Most people will start with one syringe of Juvéderm in the lips. Some people do not even require a full syringe of Juvéderm, in which case it can be used around the lips in the smile lines or in the vertical lines above and below the lips.
I don't want to look like a duck.
That's the great thing about having your treatment done with Dr. Alex at A E Skin. Dr. Alex always starts with a conservative amount of product. This is because you could always add more later but it is difficult to remove the product (although this can be done).
Will I bruise after a Juvéderm treatment?
Bruising is not uncommon with Juvéderm treatments and other fillers such as Voluma and Restylane. Some people are more susceptible to bruising than others. To reduce the risk of bruising avoid any blood thinners such as aspirin for a few days before and after the treatment and apply cold compresses such as ice packs to the treated areas. Some areas have a higher risk for bruising than others. Areas around the eyes have a lot of blood vessels and pose a higher risk of bruising. Another great thing about having your Juvéderm treatment done with Dr. Alex at A E Skin is that we treat your bruises as early as the next day at no extra charge. Dr. Alex uses a laser to target the blood and the bruise usually disappears in a few days.
What else can I do to enhance my lips?
In addition to restoring the volume with Juvéderm you can use Botox to further enhance the lips. Botox works by relaxing muscles. There is a muscle that goes around the lips. By adding a small amount of Botox in this area, the muscle will relax and you will have more of a pout. Also placing a small amount of Botox in the jawline near the chin will pull up the corners of the mouth by about one millimeter, decreasing the sad face look that people sometimes get over time. The results of Botox in these areas are subtle. Often times there is a strange sensation when using the lips for the first couple of weeks.
