What is a chemical peel?

chemical peel is a treatment performed in the office which removes the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.

What does a chemical peel treat?

chemical peel is used to treat a variety of conditions. These include a number of signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and enlarged pores. Chemical peels are also great for those with acne because the peel leads to removal of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin which can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.

What happens during a chemical peel treatment?

chemical peel starts by cleansing the face with special cleansing solutions to remove and impurities on the surface. Then the peeling solution is applied. The peeling solution is a liquid and can be applied with a variety of applicators, brushes, or gauze pads. You will feel a tingling, burning, or itching sensation while the solution is on the skin. This is normal and indicates that the peel is working. Depending on the peeling solution you may see a white frost appear on the skin. This is either salt precipitating on the skin surface or proteins being denatured on the skin. The frost will go away on its own within a few hours. Some peeling solutions require neutralization with water, which provides comfort during the treatment. Often times cold air or a fan is used to keep you comfortable during the treatment. Other solutions self-neutralize or do not require neutralization. Some solutions such as the Red Carpet Peel contain a numbing ingredient for comfort and so that neutralization is not required for improved efficacy. Afterwards sunscreen is applied to protect the skin from the sun.

What will I look like after a chemical peel?

With some peeling solutions there is little to no peeling or perhaps mild flaking. With stronger peels the layers of the skin will come off slowly. Sometimes they come off in sheets like a snake. Most people will peel on days three to five after a treatment, but everyone is different. Some people do not peel at all and this is ok because the goal is to see improvement on the skin, not to peel. Improvement is measure by looking at before and after pictures. It is important to wait several weeks before looking at the pictures and to actually look at the before and after pictures side by side. Most people look in the mirror every day so they remember what they looked like the day before, but not necessarily a few weeks ago.

What do I do after a chemical peel?

It is important to carefully follow the aftercare instructions. Avoid heat, alcohol, and exercise for a few days after the chemical peel because this can lead to side effects such as redness, blisters, and discoloration. Redness and swelling are normal for several days after a peel. Use cold compresses such as ice packs to keep you comfortable if necessary. Be sure to use sunscreen every day. An aftercare kit is especially effective to speed up your recovery. Dr. Alexrecommends the Avene thermal spray water and the Elta MD Intense Moisturizer. Spray a small amount of the Avene thermal water onto the skin and apply a thin layer of the Elta MD Intense Moisturizer onto a wet skin surface. Do this every couple of hours for the first few days. It is important to know that sometimes dark spots can get darker before they get lighter so don't worry if this happens.

How many chemical peels do I need?

Everyone's skin is different and each person has her own concerns. But most people start with a series of three to six chemical peel treatments performed at four to eight week intervals. Then maintenance treatments are done once every three to six months.

What is the Red Carpet Peel?

The Red Carpet Peel is a certain chemical peel used by Dr. Alex at A E Skin to address multiple signs of aging. It contains multiple ingredients that penetrate into different depths in the skin allowing Dr. Alex to treat both superficial and deep concerns. It is available at different strengths and different amounts can be used. This allows Dr. Alex to individualize the treatment for each person, depending on her concerns and recovery time. The Red Carpet Peel contains a numbing ingredient so that you feel comfortable during the treatment. At A E Skin we use a painless technique with cold air for further comfort.

Dr. Alex has performed hundreds of chemical peels on many satisfied patients. He even does the treatment on himself to rejuvenate his skin. Check out these links for videos with information and testimonials:
