When treating chronic conditions associated with aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, and sundamage it is important to continue maintenance with a good skin care regimen and regular treatments. The reason for this is that chronic conditions are just that, chronic. Unlike the common cold where you can take an antibiotic and it's gone, these conditions are ongoing. They occur due to various insults, but mainly the sun. And since we are getting sun exposure every day, we accumulate this damage of time and it needs to be addressed. Additionally, in melasma, the condition is due to an imbalance of hormones on the inside, so no matter what we do for the skin the problem will return and maintenance will be required. The most important aspect for maintenance is a good sunscreen such as the Elta MD UV Clear, UV Physical, and UV Daily or the MD Solar Mineral Tinted Creme with a minimum SPF of 30 and UVA and UVB protection. Other products that help include brightening creams, exfoliants, antioxidants, hydrating products, and moisturizers. In terms of treatments, whether it is a facial, microdermabrasion, chemical peel, laser treatment, or other treatment, most people start with an initial series of three to six treatments every four to eight weeks. After that, maintenance treatments are done every three to six months. Contact us if it is time for a maintenance treatment to schedule an appointment with Dr. Alex.
