Laser Hair Removal Now Available

We are excited to announce that we are now offering laser hair removal at A E Skin for small areas.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by using laser or light-based energy to target the pigment in the hair. The hair absorbs the laser, heats up, and destroys the follicle.

What areas of the body can be treated?

Just about any area of the body can be treated. At A E Skin Dr. Alex performs laser hair removal on small areas such as the underarms, upper lip, chin, and sideburns.

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?

The best candidates for laser hair removal are those with light skin and dark hair. This is because the target of the laser is pigment, and the pigment in the hair is the same as the pigment in the skin. So we want the laser to target the pigment in the hair, not the pigment in the skin. Laser hair removal does not work on red, blonde, grey, or white hairs because these hairs either contain no pigment at all (white hair) or contain a different pigment not absorbed by the laser (red and blonde hair). In these cases electrolysis is recommended.

Who should not have laser hair removal?

The safety and efficacy of laser hair removal has not been studied on women who are pregnant, breast feeding, or trying to become pregnant. Dr. Alex recommends starting a treatment when breast feeding is complete. Some people have a condition called PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome). This causes hair to grow on certain areas such as the chin. While hair reduction can be seen in people who have PCOS, continuous maintenance treatments may be required.

How long does the laser hair removal treatment take?

Depending on the area, a laser hair removal treatment can take less than one minute to over 30 minutes. Small areas treated at  A E Skin (upper lip, sideburns, chin, underarms) generally take less than two minutes of treatment time.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

During a laser hair removal treatment a fraction of the hairs are treated. This is because only a certain number of the hairs are in the appropriate portion of the hair growth cycle at any given time. These hair will be treated, while others will not. For this reason a series of six to eight laser hair removal treatments are recommended. Treatments are recommended every four to six weeks on the face and every six to eight weeks on the rest of the body.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Although it is called laser hair removal, the treatment leads to permanent hair reduction. Removal of 100% of the hair is unlikely, but a large majority can be removed with a series of treatments. Maintenance treatments are performed once every year or two.

When will I see results after a laser hair removal treatment?

The results of a laser hair removal treatment are not immediate. A series of treatments is required and improvement will be seen over that time. Often times fewer hairs will be seen, they will be less thick, and shaving will not be required as frequently.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

With any laser treatment discomfort is possible and everyone's pain tolerance is different. At A E Skin patient satisfaction is a top priority and we therefore provide complimentary numbing cream to keep our patients comfortable. Numbing cream is left on for approximately 15 minutes prior to the treatment.
