Use of Products and Treatment

The importance of using appropriate skin care products after treatments such as chemical peels, Forever Young BBL IPL photofacial treatments, and other laser treatments can not be stressed enough. From time to time I have patients concerned about redness, irritation, discomfort, and rashes after such treatments. In almost all of the cases it has to do with what they are applying to their skin after a treatment. With so many products out there it can be confusing as to what is good for the skin after a treatment. I always recommend discussing all products you use regularly before a treatment to determine if they should be used for the week or so after the treatment. The most common mistake I run into is that people think that just because a product is over-the-counter, it is safe to use after a treatment. It is important to look at the ingredients to make sure the product does not include potential irritants such as retinoids, hydroxy acids, and hydroquinone. While these products are great for daily skin care regimens, they should be avoided for a few days before a treatment and a week after. I recommend using a gently face wash such as the Elta MD Foaming Facial cleanser, bland moisturizer such as the Elta MD Intense moisturizer, and physical sunscreens with zinc or titanium. Intense moisturizers go on best onto wet skin; the Avene thermal spring water is perfect to apply just before a moisturizer. The most important thing is that if you are unsure as to what you should use after a treatment, ask. Please contact us for a free consultation with Dr. Alex.
