Why Are My Cheeks Bumpy After Voluma?

"Why are my cheeks bumpy after a Voluma treatment?" is a common question we get. In order to address this question we need to understand what Voluma is, what is does, and where it goes.

What is Voluma?

Voluma is one of the newer dermal fillers like JuvedermRestylane, and Radiessethat is used to rejuvenate the face. Unlike other fillers, Voluma is the only filler approved to treat mid-face volume loss. Made by Allergan, the same company that makes BotoxJuvederm, and LatisseVoluma is composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water.

What does Voluma treat?

Voluma is designed to provide the volume in the upper cheeks that we naturally lose over time. This volume loss, along with collagen loss in the skin and gravity, cause things to sink and we see changes such as the smile lines (from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth), marrionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the jaw line), and jowls (sagging under the jawline). Volumarestores the volume to the mid-face, allowing you to defy gravity by giving your face an instant lift and correcting these signs of aging.

How long does Voluma last?

One of the best things about Voluma is that it lasts so long. Most people enjoy their results for up to two years with optimal treatments.

Does a Voluma treatment hurt?

Any time a needle is injected into the skin there is a risk for pain. However, at A E Skin we apply complimentary numbing cream to keep the treatment as comfortable as possible. Also, Voluma contains a numbing agent so that the skin gets numb with each injection.

Where is Voluma injected?

Voluma is desigend to provide the structural support caused by bone loss. Therefore Voluma is injected directly on the bone in the upper cheeks. This is a deeper injection than fillers such as JuvedermRestylane, and Radiesse. Small amounts are deposited along the cheek bone. These are then smoothened out with massage.

Why do I feel lumps on my cheeks after a Voluma treatment?

After a Voluma treatment, a lumpy bumpy feeling in the area is completely normal. This is due to a combination of the small droplets of Voluma being placed on the bone as well as swelling which occurs with any injection. The droplets are massaged in immediately after the treatment in the office by Dr. Alex as well as for the next several days by you. We recommend gently massaging the area for five minutes at a time, five times a day, for the first five days. The swelling is also normal and normally goes down within two weeks, but for some people it may last up to four weeks. At this point the final results are seen. This is the best time to take your after pictures and compare them with your before pictures to see if you want further enhancement with more Voluma or enhancement with other products such as Juvederm.

Bruising is also a common reaction after a Voluma treatment. At A E Skin, we provide complimentary laser treatments for bruises which make the bruise go away faster. We also provide complimetary ice packs after any injectable treatment (BotoxJuvedermRestylane, or Voluma) to minimize the risk of bruising in the first place.
