Find out if a chemical peel is exactly what you need to improve your skin’s appearance.
Does the phrase “aging gracefully” seem false? Do you feel like years of sunbathing or not giving your skin the proper care it needs has left you dealing with sun damage, wrinkles and lines, and an uneven skin tone? Are you looking for ways to reverse some of these changes to improve the overall appearance of your skin? If so, then it might be time to ask our Encino, CA, dermatologist, Dr. Alex Eshaghian, about chemical peels.
What is a chemical peel?
During a chemical peel, a special solution is applied to the skin. The purpose of this solution is to remove the outer layer of dead skin to reveal softer, smoother and more radiant skin underneath. The skin won’t immediately peel away during your procedure. The peel will cause a blistering effect, but after a few days the old, dead skin will peel away to show healthy, new skin. Your recovery time will really depend on the intensity of the chemical peel (superficial vs. deep) you choose to get.
What issues can a chemical peel actually address?
A chemical peel can provide a host of awesome benefits for the right candidate including:
- Reducing the appearance of superficial scars, lines and wrinkles
- Improving acne
- Evening out skin tone and reducing the appearance of brown patches, sunspots and age spots
- Boosting the tone, texture, and radiance of your skin
Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?
There are so many different dermatological options out there that it can often be difficult to figure out which one is actually the best one for you. This is where our Encino skin doctor can come in and help you decide. Let’s sit down and chat about your treatment goals. This treatment is great for minor-to-moderate lines, wrinkles, scars and acne but it won’t treat sagging or severely wrinkled skin. By letting us know your goals for treatment we can also determine if other options like cosmetic fillers or a brow lift may also be a great complementary treatment to your chemical peel.

Winter is here and there are many changes. We tend to stay indoors and wear warm clothing. This makes it the perfect time for certain treatments that some may not get during the spring, summer, or fall. Here we discuss some of the most common treatment people have during the wintertime.
While the most common cosmetic concerns women have are about their faces, the rest of the body is important too. A common concern in the lower body is veins on the legs. These tend to appear over time and can be genetic. Other factors include wearing high heels and standing up for long periods of time. Fortunately, we can treat most leg veins with a laser. The light from the laser targets the blood and destroys the vein. After the treatment, you can have a bruise or darkening of the skin. But during the winter when we wear warm clothes it is easy to cover this up.
Chemical peels such as the Red Carpet Peel work well for a variety of concerns including fine lines, wrinkles, and dark discolorations. With stronger treatments there can be some recovery time when the skin is red or even peeling. During this time it is important to avoid the sun. The winter is an ideal time for this treatment because many people stay indoors during the cold winter months.
The fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatment is a more aggressive treatment that addresses fine lines, deeper wrinkles, and sun damage. Results from a single treatment can be impressive. The treatment stimulates collagen over time and improvement is seen slowly over several months. The downside is that there is usually one to two weeks of recovery time which includes redness, swelling, and flaking or crusting. Many people do this treatment when they have time off in the winter and are not seen by there coworkers or clients.
Do you want to reverse the aging process? Unlike any other procedure, the Red Carpet Peel will enhance your skin’s natural beauty and give you a youthful radiance, making you look your best for any special occasion. An occasion such as a wedding is an outstanding opportunity to make your skin look younger and more radiant. Chemical peels work great for this purpose. Using a synergistic combination of ingredients, the Red Carpet Peel improves fine lines, wrinkles, and discolorations, while at the same time stimulating the production of collagen, leading to tighter skin and closing pores. It is also perfect for acne and acne scars. You will see dramatic results in about a week with this virtually painless procedure which takes less than 15 minutes. Dr. Alex recommends an initial series of three to six treatments at four to eight week intervals, followed by maintenance treatments once every three to four months.
As we age, dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of the skin. When light hits such skin, it does not reflect, giving a dull appearance. Exfoliation with chemical peels removes this layer and provides a glow to the skin. It works great for a variety of skin conditions including acne, discoloration, enlarged pores, scars, and even some pre-cancerous lesions. When performed in a series at monthly intervals and combined with skin care products such as anti-oxidants, exfoliants, retinoids, bleaching agents, and sunscreens beautiful results can be obtained.
A E Skin Red Carpet Peel Experience
The A E Skin Red Carpet Peel experience is fast, safe, and comfortable. It provides outstanding results for facial rejuvenation, with improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, and discolorations, as well as active acne and acne scars. We start by washing your face and taking baseline photographs to monitor your progress. Next we sit you down in front of a fan to keep you comfortable. We'll then clean your skin with cleansing solutions. When the peeling agent is applied, you will feel a tingling, burning, or itching sensation, but this will subside shortly because it contains a numbing ingredient. We will let you sit in front of the cold air for a few more minutes and we're done. We'll apply sunscreen to your skin and you are good to go.
Chemical Peel Aftercare Instructions
For best results, carefully follow these aftercare instructions: Please avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours after the treatment. Heat refers to going out in the hot sun, if it were to be hot outdoors, but also any hot environment indoors, such as a hot bath, sauna, or steam room. Also avoid hot or spicy foods or drinks like soup, hot coffee, or hot tea because all of these things will bring blood to the skin and cause problem like redness, blister, and discolorations. Avoid harsh rubbing or scrubbing for one week after the treatment. Do not use products such as washcloths or the Clarisonic brush. Avoid direct water contact from the showerhead when in the shower. Please avoid makeup for several days after the treatment because your skin will be sensitive. You may be red for a few days after the treatment. Redness is normal, don't be alarmed. Feel free to apply cold compresses to your skin to keep you comfortable, if necessary. Sometimes dark discolorations get darker before they get lighter; this is normal. For the week after your treatment, spray a small amount of the Avene thermal water then apply a thin layer of the Elta MD Intense Moisturizer every few hours to improve the healing process. Be sure to apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 every day.
What Happens After a Chemical Peel?
Most people will peel on days three to five after the treatment, but everyone is different. Some people don't peel at all. This is ok, for the goal is not to peel, it is to get results. These people are actually getting exfoliation, but it is microscopic, so you don't see it. If you do get visible peeling, please do not pick at it, otherwise you may have side effects such as redness, blisters, and discolorations. By seven days, the new skin has formed. It is refreshed and rejuvenated, and you will see improvements in color texture and tone.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment performed in the office which removes the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.
What does a chemical peel treat?
A chemical peel is used to treat a variety of conditions. These include a number of signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and enlarged pores. Chemical peels are also great for those with acne because the peel leads to removal of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin which can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.
What happens during a chemical peel treatment?
A chemical peel starts by cleansing the face with special cleansing solutions to remove and impurities on the surface. Then the peeling solution is applied. The peeling solution is a liquid and can be applied with a variety of applicators, brushes, or gauze pads. You will feel a tingling, burning, or itching sensation while the solution is on the skin. This is normal and indicates that the peel is working. Depending on the peeling solution you may see a white frost appear on the skin. This is either salt precipitating on the skin surface or proteins being denatured on the skin. The frost will go away on its own within a few hours. Some peeling solutions require neutralization with water, which provides comfort during the treatment. Often times cold air or a fan is used to keep you comfortable during the treatment. Other solutions self-neutralize or do not require neutralization. Some solutions such as the Red Carpet Peel contain a numbing ingredient for comfort and so that neutralization is not required for improved efficacy. Afterwards sunscreen is applied to protect the skin from the sun.
What will I look like after a chemical peel?
With some peeling solutions there is little to no peeling or perhaps mild flaking. With stronger peels the layers of the skin will come off slowly. Sometimes they come off in sheets like a snake. Most people will peel on days three to five after a treatment, but everyone is different. Some people do not peel at all and this is ok because the goal is to see improvement on the skin, not to peel. Improvement is measure by looking at before and after pictures. It is important to wait several weeks before looking at the pictures and to actually look at the before and after pictures side by side. Most people look in the mirror every day so they remember what they looked like the day before, but not necessarily a few weeks ago.
What do I do after a chemical peel?
It is important to carefully follow the aftercare instructions. Avoid heat, alcohol, and exercise for a few days after the chemical peel because this can lead to side effects such as redness, blisters, and discoloration. Redness and swelling are normal for several days after a peel. Use cold compresses such as ice packs to keep you comfortable if necessary. Be sure to use sunscreen every day. An aftercare kit is especially effective to speed up your recovery. Dr. Alex recommends the Avene thermal spray water and the Elta MD Intense Moisturizer. Spray a small amount of the Avene thermal water onto the skin and apply a thin layer of the Elta MD Intense Moisturizer onto a wet skin surface. Do this every couple of hours for the first few days. It is important to know that sometimes dark spots can get darker before they get lighter so don't worry if this happens.
