Fillers for Hand Rejuvenation

We all know about how dermal fillers such as JuvedermRestylaneRadiesse, and Voluma are used to rejuvenate the face. But did you know that these dermal fillers can also be used to rejuvenate the hands?

Why do I need dermal fillers?

With age we lose volume in the skin. This is apparent on the face when the cheek fat pads get smaller, leading to a descent, giving the appearance of the smile lines or laugh lines (nasolabial foods), marionette lines, a square shaped face, jowls, and decreased definition along the jawline. Dermal fillers are used to restore this volume and provide a youthful appearance.

What other areas can be rejuvenated with dermal fillers?

Facial rejuvenation is very common because your face is the first thing people see when they look at you. But it the face is rejuvenated and other areas are not, there is a mismatch. For example, you meet someone and their face looks great. But when you shake her hand, the hand looks much older. This is a dead giveaway that treatments were done. Now rejuvenation is done on other areas. The backs of the hands is another area where we lose volume over time. This leads to visibility of veins and tendons. Dermal fillers such as JuvedermRestylaneRadiesse, and Volumacan be used to restore the volume in the hands and provide a youthful appearance there too.

What happens during a hand dermal filler treatment?

The dermal filler treatment is very straight forward. The areas are numbed with a cream for about 15 minutes, just like the face. A small needle is used to inject the material into the skin and it is easily massaged to smoothen it out right after.

What is a cannula?

Sometimes we use a cannula to inject dermal fillers. A cannula  is similar to a needle but it is longer and has a blunt tip instead of a sharp tip. This provides multiple advantages. There is only one injection site for improved comfort. A blunt tipped cannula will not pierce blood vessels. This is important because if the dermal filler gets into an artery there can be necrosis, or skin death, in the nearby area. Also the risk of bruising is decreased.

Is the dermal filler treament painful?

At A E Skin we apply complimentary numbing cream for about 15 minutes prior to your dermal filler treatment to maximize your comfort. Most people tolerate the dermal filler treatment very well.

How long does the dermal filler treatment take?

The dermal filler treatment usually takes less than 15 minutes.

How much dermal filler will I need for my hands?

The amount of dermal filler used for the hands is variable and depends on the amount of volume loss. The more volume loss, the more hollow the hands appear, and the more dermal filler will be required. Most people require anywhere from two to four syringes for both hands, but some people require even more. Dr. Alex recommends returning two weeks after your dermal filler treatment to assess your results and decide if you want more dermal filler.

When will I see results after a dermal filler treatment in the hand?

You will see the results right away after you dermal filler treatment in the hands.

How long do the results of dermal filler treatments in the hands last?

You will enjoy your results of you dermal filler treatment in the hands for about six months. This is less than the longevity of fillers in the face because we use our hands for numerous activities and the dermal filler gets metabolized more quickly.

What should I do after my dermal filler treatment?

After your dermal filler treatment avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Gently massage the areas for five minutes at a time, five times per day, for the first five days. This will help smooth out the dermal filler (but it doesn’t degrade it). You can apply a moisturizer on the skin to help massage the area.
