Do I Need Numbing Cream for Botox?

Botox is the currently the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world. But pain is one of the most common concerns. Keep reading to learn more.

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified protein used to treat wrinkles caused by facial expressions. It was first used to treat the vertical frown lines or elevens you see between your eyes when you frown. It is also used to treat the crow’s feet wrinkles you see around your eyes when you smile or squint, horizontal wrinkles you see on your forehead when you raise or brows, and more. A Botox treatment takes just a few minutes and is really easy. You’ll see initial results from your Botox treatment in the first few days and most people enjoy the results of their Botox treatment for three to four months.

Does Botox hurt?

With any injection there is a risk of pain. This includes Botox, but also when you get blood drawn, get a vaccine, or get a dermal filler treatment. Dr. Alex has developed a painless Botox injection technique so you hardly feel a thing. First, we provide a comfortable atmosphere with calming music to help you relax. During your Botox treatment, we blow cold air on your skin at the treatment site. This numbs your skin so you hardly feel it. It also keeps blood from coming to the area, which reduces the risk of bleeding and bruising. Dr. Alex also uses a vibrating distractor called the beauty bar. It vibrates and is placed on your skin near the Botox treatment site. When you notice vibration, you tend not to feel the injection as much. Dr. Alex also uses 32 gauge needles, which are even smaller than the more common 30 gauge needles (the higher the gauge, the smaller the needle). The common 18 gauge needles used for blood routine blood draws are 1.3 mm in diameter. 30 gauge needles are 0.3 mm in diameter and 32 gauge needles are 0.2 mm in diameter. If you look closely, you can see how tiny the needle is. The smaller 32 gauge needles are more expensive than 30 gauge needles, but the difference in comfort is noticeable.

Do I need numbing cream for my Botox treatment?

With all of the things we provide, your Botox treatment will be almost completely painless. Although some people are understandably scared of needles and ask for numbing cream, when they experience Dr. Alex’s painless injection technique, they realize it’s not necessary. Also numbing cream takes about 15 minutes to kick in so that would increase the time of your Botox treatment.
