What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein used to treat wrinkles caused by making facial expressions like frowning. Botox can also be used for a variety of other purposes such as slimming the lower face. Botox works by relaxing muscles. When your muscles are relaxed after a Botox treatment, the wrinkles soften. Botox works great for wrinkles such as frown lines between your eyebrows. Botox can relax bulky muscles in the lower face to make you look slimmer. Dr. Alex uses a painless Botox technique to make the treatment easy.
What can Botox do in the lower face?
Botox works by relaxing muscles. Botox is most commonly used in the upper face to treat muscles caused by making facial expressions. When you make facial expressions, you use certain muscles in your face. Like other muscles in the body, with repetitive use, these muscles become stronger. As they do you will start to see wrinkles in the skin. When your muscles are relaxed with Botox, the wrinkles get softer or go away completely. Botox works the same way in the lower face, by relaxing muscles. But in your lower face you have different types of muscles. One of them is called the masseter muscle. This is a large muscle that you use to bite. In some people such as those who grind or clench their teeth, the masseter muscle can get strong. Over time the muscle gets bigger and can make the lower face look wider. This can give you a masculine appearance. When your masseter muscle is relaxed with Botox, the muscle gets smaller, making you look thinner.
What is TMJ pain?
TMJ stands for temporo-mandibular joint. This is a joint that connects two bones on either side of your face. This joint connects your jaw bone to the upper face. This is the joint that moves when you open and close your mouth. Some people grind or clench their teeth, often times in their sleep. Over time this can cause the TMJ joint to become inflamed. The inflammation can cause pain in the area, which is called TMJ pain. Some people also experience headaches as a result of TMJ pain. Relaxing the masseter muscle in the lower face using Botox can help with TMJ pain and associated tightness or headaches.

Hi my name is Leslie. Before I came to Dr. Alex, I was experiencing pain in my lower face. I would get headaches. I would have a really hard time because I would clench my teeth. Dr. Alex did recommend a Botox treatment on my lower face. When Dr. Alex recommended the Botox treatment, I was very nervous. I thought the treatment was going to be very painful. But they made it very comfortable for me. They gave me cold air. They relaxed me so it was very helpful. So, it’s been two weeks since I’ve had my Botox treatment. And I do notice my face is slimmer. It looks like I’ve lost weight. It’s helped with the pain. I don’t clench my teeth as much and it feels very relaxed. I definitely recommend this treatment for anyone that has pain in the lower face. Thank you Dr. Alex.

What should I do after a Botox treatment?
It’s important that you carefully follow the simple aftercare instructions after your Botox treatment. Dr. Alex recommends avoiding heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours after a Botox treatment and staying upright without bending forward or lying flat for four hours after a Botox treatment. Heat exposure refers to going outdoors in the hot sun and staying there for prolonged periods, if it were to be hot outside. But also avoid hot environments indoors such as a hot bath, sauna, or steam room. You can take a shower after a Botox treatment, but make sure it’s not too long and not too hot. Strenuous exercise is any exercise that makes you short of breath, increases your heart rate, or makes you sweat. All of these things can cause the Botox to move to other areas and relax muscles that were not intended to be treated. This can result in temporary blurred vision, droopy eyelids, and other things. Most people will start to notice the effects of their Botox treatment after a few days, but it can take two weeks to see full results. And you’ll enjoy your Botox results for about three to four months. At that time, Dr. Alex recommends a maintenance Botox treatment.
