Why do I have dark spots on my skin?

Dark spots and uneven color are very common. Sometimes it’s genetic (like freckles), sometimes it’s hormonal (melasma). But most of the time it is a result of sun exposure for years or decades. Over time, the sun can damage your skin in many ways. One of them is leaving dark spots on your skin. This is your body’s natural way of protecting your skin from the damage caused by sunlight.

How can I treat uneven color on my skin?

There are many things you can dur to treat uneven color on your skin. The first and most important is to protect your skin from further damage by using sunscreen every day. Dr. Alex recommends a sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 every day. Make sure you apply it even if you’re outside or if it’s overcast. You can use specific skin care products to decrease the pigment in the dark spots. Look for ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, retin-A, retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea extract. You can find these in a number of the A E Skin products such as the Brightening Cream, Illuminating Cream, Restorative Cream, and Triple Antioxidant Serum. Using these products every day for a few months will provide a significant improvement in the appearance of your skin. You can also treat it with treatments such as an IPL Photofacial. You’ll get the best results by combining the skin care products with IPL Photofacial treatments.

What is an IPL Photofacial treatment?

An IPL Photofacial is a laser-based treatment where bright light is used to target and destroy uneven color in your skin. It also works well for redness and broken capillaries. The light is absorbed by the pigment. When this happens, the pigment is heated and destroyed. Dr. Alex recommends a series of six IPL Photofacial treatments done once a month followed by a maintenance treatment once every three months after that. Dr. Alex uses the Sciton Forever Young BBL IPL Photofacial, which is the best device for this treatment because it has a number of benefits. It is fast and safe. There is minimal risk of side effects such as undertreatment or overtreatment which can lead to striping as seen with other devices. It has multiple settings so that all skin types can be treated, from the lightest to the darkest. It also includes collagen settings, which further improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pores, and scars.

What happens during an IPL Photofacial treatment?

Before your IPL Photofacial treatment, we’ll take baseline pictures of your skin to monitor your progress. Then we’ll apply numbing cream for about 15 minutes. After that, we remove the numbing cream and further clean your skin. You will receive eye protection over your eyes. You will still see the bright like. This is ok and safe, just keep your eyes closed. Next, we’ll apply cold gel on your skin to transmit the light and blow cold air on your skin to keep your comfortable. The treatment feels like a hot rubber band snapping on your skin. Most people tolerate it well and are very comfortable. The entire IPL Photofacial treatment takes just a few minutes. After your IPL Photofacial treatment, we’ll take off your eye protection, clean your skin, and apply sunscreen.

What should I do after an IPL Photofacial treatment?

After your IPL Photofacial treatment, avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Heat exposure refers to going outdoors in the hot sun for prolonged periods if it’s hot outside. Also be sure to avoid hot environments indoors such as a hot bath, sauna, or steam room. You can take a shower, just make sure the water is not too hot and don’t stay in the shower for very long. Additionally, avoid hot or spicy foods such as soup, hot coffee, or hot tea (iced coffee and iced tea are ok). Strenuous exercise is anything that makes your heart rate increase, makes you sweat, or makes you short of breath. Avoid applying makeup for a few hours after your IPL Photofacial treatment because your skin may be sensitive. And your skin may be a little red or swollen for a few hours after your IPL Photofacial treatment. This is normal and you can apply cold compresses such as ice packs to keep you comfortable if you need to. Sometimes dark spots get darker before they get lighter. And sometimes they flake off your skin, while other times they get absorbed. All of this is normal and can take up to a week or two. Finally, make sure to apply sunscreen every day.
